“Kissing offers a number of important health benefits, both physical and emotional”affirmations Claudia Petripedagogue specializing in Clinical Sexology, member of the Brazilian Society of Human Sexuality and specialist in Sex Education at the UFSC.

Second monica Axpsychologist and graduate in Psychoanalysis and Mental Health at the Albert Einstein Hospital Teaching and Research Institute, regardless of the type of kiss, the act is pleasant in any emotional relationship.

Research by Arizona State University, in the United States, analyzed the benefits of kissing and concluded that it improves the immune system, helps fight stress and, in some cases, can also contribute to the parasympathetic nervous system, a mechanism that the body takes over when we are comfortable and relaxed.

The benefits of the kiss

Reduces stress and increases well-being

A study published in Annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) have shown that kissing stimulates the release of neurotransmitter hormones, such as dopamine and serotonin, responsible for feelings of pleasure and well-being.

“The more passionate the kiss, the more hormones are released. Furthermore, these neurotransmitters inhibit cortisol, a hormone that is activated in times of stress and which causes various damages to the body”emphasizes psychologist Monica Machado.

Increases libido during sexual intercourse

The act of kissing on the mouth is closely related to sexual desire. In both men and women, kissing on the mouth releases testosterone, the main hormone responsible for libido and sexual attraction.

“If the couple kisses frequently, the intimate relationship becomes much more pleasant. The absence or scarcity of kisses is a factor strongly correlated to the lack of orgasm in women, to erectile dysfunction and, consequently, to the sexual dissatisfaction of the couple”warns Claudia Petry.

Strengthens immunity

Kissing can increase the performance of the immune system, as the bacteria that normally circulate in the exchange of secretions and saliva are important in helping the body to acquire more resistance, creating antibodies and balancing the immune system. But if you’re sick, save the kiss for later.

Benefits for the whole body

Did you know that a kiss burns two to three calories per minute by moving 34 facial muscles and 112 muscles related to posture? Also, arousal during a kiss causes vasodilation throughout the body.

“The opening of the vessels, together with the acceleration of the heart rate from 70 to 140 beats per minute, contributes to the increase in the amount of blood carried to the tissues. This intensification of circulation nourishes the cells, tones the skin and also relieves pain in the body, such as migraines and headaches”says Claudia Petry.

Improve self-esteem

A good kiss increases the production of oxytocin, known as the hormone of love and affection, and of vasopressin, whose action is associated with strengthening emotional ties.

“All of this generates feelings of conquest, seduction, desire and fulfillment, increasing self-esteem and self-confidence, essential for evaluating situations with clarity, having real expectations and keeping the mind free from unnecessary judgements”concludes Monica Machado.
