Without a clear cause, it can produce intense pain and even lead to depression.
Fibromyalgia occurs mainly in women. Scientifically, there is no clear reason for this, and any relationship to female hormones is ruled out, as women are affected both before and after menopause. The highest incidence is between 30 and 60 years of age. Fibromyalgia is a pain related to the central nervous system, it can cause very intense pain throughout the body and reach tendons and joints. Its specific cause is still unknown. There is no single cause. There is one clue, provided by serotonin levels, which tend to be lower in fibromyalgia sufferers. Tension, stress, and hormonal imbalances can also trigger fibromyalgia. Studies published by the US National Library of Medicine in the US have shown that patients with fibromyalgia have greater pain sensitivity than non-patients, as if they had a deregulated pain volume knob. The main symptoms of fibromyalgia are:
- Widespread pain;
- Fatigue, lack of disposition and energy;
- Sensitivity when urinating;
- sleep disorders;
- Emotional/psychological disturbances;
- heachache;
- Touch sensitivity in the affected region;
- Eventually depression.

time of pain
The moment of greatest incidence of pain is usually at the end of the day. Unlike arthritis, fibromyalgia does not cause swelling, as there is no local inflammation. However, the pain is very intense and, patients report, strongest around the joints. Another important point is fatigue. The person has the impression of waking up tired, and that the night’s sleep has not been restful, and this sensation can also increase during the day.
Diagnosis
The diagnostic criteria observe, first, whether the pain persists for more than three months; what are the points where the pain is affecting, within a pre-established criterion; in all, 18 points are evaluated by the doctor and, if the person has other important disorders, such as sleep, which is a recurring disorder among patients. Diagnosis is clinical, so no laboratory tests are needed. However, your doctor may ask you to rule out other conditions that can cause similar pain.
Treatment
The treatment is carried out through multidisciplinary care: analgesics and anti-inflammatories and associated antidepressants; acupuncture; massages; psychological follow-up and regular physical activity. In addition, doctors recommend avoiding carrying excessive weight, situations that can produce stress and compromise sleep, such as light, noise, mobile phone on, among others.
