The singer who has bowel cancer suffered septic shock in March and is now recovering from the sequels
After weeks away from social networks, Preta Gil returned to Instagram this Sunday (17) to reveal that she had suffered from “septicemia”. The disease, known as the leading cause of death in intensive care, struck the artist last month during his treatment for adenocarcinoma, a type of bowel cancer.
“I did really badly,” said the singer and businesswoman. She says she started feeling sick on March 22 and went to the hospital, on doctors advice, with a first case of dehydration.
Septic shock occurred the next day, and according to the artist, the doctors’ assessment is that bacteria had lodged in the catheter he was using. “We did an examination later on the catheter and we saw that she had this bacterium, so there were very difficult moments, I went through delicate moments,” she specified.
Already convalescent, Preta will continue with treatment against the infection because he has sequelae in his lungs. Only after that period will you be able to resume anticancer therapies.
What is septicemia?
Today, better known as sepsis, the disease that struck the artist can be defined as a set of serious manifestations that occur throughout the body following an infection.
This means that the infection can also be located in one organ, but the inflammation caused by it reaches the whole body, which can affect the functioning of several organs. In severe cases, it can lead to dysfunction or even failure of multiple organs, as explained by the Ministry of Health.
Preta Gil, as a cancer patient, is even more likely to suffer from the problem. According to the government agency, some of the groups most at risk of contracting the infection are premature babies; seniors over 65; people with AIDS, who have undergone chemotherapy or have used drugs that affect the body’s defences.
What are the symptoms of sepsis?
The disease has no specific symptoms, but should serve as a warning to anyone with an infection and fever; tachycardia; tachypnea, technical name for rapid breathing; dizziness; Low pressure; shortness of breath; excessive sleepiness; and confusion.
What is the treatment for sepsis?
A serious disease, sepsis kills 11 million people a year, according to a survey by the World Health Organization (WHO). In Brazil alone, according to Fiocruz, there are about 240,000 victims a year.
Such seriousness explains why the first few hours of treatment are so important. The Ministry of Health stresses that patients should be treated with antibiotics – as Preta Gil did – quickly, while blood cultures should be collected to identify the causative agent of the disease.

As explained by the artist herself in March, she underwent cycles of chemotherapy and, when she is completely cured of sepsis, she will resume the sessions. Subsequently, Gilberto Gil’s daughter will undergo another five sessions of radiotherapy and then surgery to remove the tumor.
