Makeup brushes can be dirtier than a toilet; know how to clean

Cosmetic scientist Carly Musleh’s study demonstrates how important it is to know how to properly clean your makeup brushes

In the past week, you must have seen on the internet that makeup brushes can accumulate so much bacteria they get even dirtier than the toilet. It is also possible that you had doubts about the veracity of the information, which may seem a little absurd at first.

However, this is real. A study conducted by the cosmetics company Spectrum Collections in the UK and led by cosmetic scientist Carly Musleh came to exactly this conclusion. And yes, not cleaning your makeup brushes can leave them looking as dirty as a toilet seat.

The study, published on the 12th, compared two sets of foundation brushes, one clean and one dirty, which were tested for two weeks. In dirty objects, it has appeared potential traces of E.Coli, yeasts and mouldswhile the clean ones had much less bacteria.

This proves how cleaning makeup brushes has a great result. However, most people who use these items don’t clean them often enough.

According to the study of Spectrum Collections20% of customers who participated in the survey admitted to sanitizing objects only once every three months, and the right thing to do would be to do so at least once a week.

So, in order not to end up using dirty makeup brushes like a toilet on your skin, you better learn once and for all how to clean them properly, right? Here’s how to do this cleanup:

Steps to clean your makeup brushes

1st step: Use running water to wet the brush bristles.

2nd step: Put some shampoo (preferably baby shampoo) or neutral detergent in your hand and scrub the bristles of the brushes.

3rd step: Use running water to rinse the bristles.

4th step: Dry the brushes by placing them on a surface with the bristles facing slightly downwards. If you can place them on a dish towel, even better.
