The titled article A conversation beyond the piggy bank was published in the magazine Children’s science today and has 3 pages. The research is coordinated by the universities of Rio de Janeiro and reviewed by scholars from different areas.

Mariana was mentored by the physics professor and postdoctoral researcher at unicamp, Yuri Mayer. The researcher explained that he and the girl’s family looked into whether she was the youngest to publish a scientific article. Having identified no other younger scientist, they intend to contact the Book of records.

“My job as a consultant is precisely to teach her the steps of scientific methodology. And that’s what she followed so that we had a scientific result regarding her topic”he said proudly.

The young scientist studied a real 640 réis coin from colonial Brazil. Nowadays, its price ranges from 800 to 5,000 reais among collectors. However, this coin is counterfeit and this is Mariana’s mission: to differentiate the real ones from the fake ones.

The first stage of the analysis involves a microscope, which allows you to observe the corrosion characteristics of the object. Subsequently, the coins are taken into the water to check their density.

“The two currencies have very close densities, which is why both have sunk [nos recipientes com água]. But when you look at the precision scale, you see that the real thing has more metal, so it’s denser. I used Archimedes’ method and also made notes on the differences between them”the girl said.

Mariana appreciated the importance of science: “Science is very important to all people and helps in many very important things. For example, if it weren’t for scientists, we wouldn’t know about Covid-19.”
