Nails are a reflection of our overall health, so if they’re not growing, it’s important to pay attention.
Just like our hair, nails matter when our body isn’t 100% healthy. Therefore, if you notice that your nails are not growing, it is worth paying attention to the following paragraphs.
NAILS: WHY AND HOW DO THEY GROW?
According to the dermatologist Dr. Lilian from Brazil nails are structures composed mostly of keratin, a tough, tough protein that has a continuous growth from the nail matrix – i.e. the nail root, located at the base.
“The nail growth process is influenced by many factors such as age, genetics, nutrition and grooming habits,” she explains. “Blood circulation and the supply of nutrients to the nail matrix are also important for nail growth.”
The doctor explains that this growth is usually faster in the hands than in the feet, and is also influenced by seasonal and hormonal factors. Fingernails usually grow 3 millimeters per month, but this rate can vary from person to person and throughout life, based on genetic characteristics.
IS IT NORMAL FOR NAILS TO STOP GROWING?
That said, the answer to this question is easy to find. “It’s not common for nails to stop growing altogether,” clarifies the doctor. “Unless there is a systemic health problem (liver or kidney dysfunction, vitamin deficiencies, anemia, etc.), or local trauma, generating significant damage to the nail matrix.”
In addition to some of the points listed above, such as age, genetics, health problems and nutritional deficiencies, nails can stop growing due to some external factors, such as contact and exposure to chemicals or excessive heat.
“Health problems, such as diabetes and liver and kidney dysfunction, autoimmune diseases, hypothyroidism, malnutrition, among others, can impair nail growth, as can excessive alcohol and tobacco consumption,” she explains. “Furthermore, the traumas generated during the manicure, such as the habit of removing the cuticles deeply or pushing them aggressively with the spatula, can alter the production of cells in the nail matrix and cause nail deformations and interfere with the growth”.
Another point raised by the dermatologist is the lack of proper care, such as keeping nails clean, moisturized and protected from external damage, which can also interfere with their growth.
“It’s important to be aware of the signs your nails may show, such as changes in color, texture, and shape, and to see a doctor if there’s any concern,” she continues.
FOOD FOR SENE NAILS
Food plays a fundamental role in nail growth, as they are mainly composed of keratin, a protein produced from specific nutrients.
“A diet rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals such as biotin, iron, calcium, zinc and vitamin C is essential for the production of keratin and, consequently, for healthy nail growth,” explains Dr. Lilian. “Deficiencies in these nutrients can result in nails that are weak, brittle, and fail to grow.”
Therefore, it is important to maintain a balanced and varied diet, with foods that provide the nutrients necessary for the health and beauty of nails.
WHY TAKE CARE OF YOUR NAILS?
Smoothing and moisturizing nails and cuticles are two important practices for maintaining health and beauty. When you file your nails, it’s important to always file them in the same direction to prevent your nails from breaking or chipping. The ideal is to use a quality sandpaper and avoid metallic sandpaper, which can damage them.
“Moisturise nails on a regular basis, using moisturizers or oils specifically for nails and cuticles. These products help nourish and strengthen nails, preventing them from becoming dry and brittle,” she says.
It is also important not to remove the cuticles frequently, as they are a natural protection of the nail and their removal can increase the risk of infection.
HOW TO STIMULATE NAIL GROWTH?
“There are certain practices that can help stimulate nail growth in a healthy way. In addition to maintaining a diet that is balanced and rich in nutrients, such as proteins, vitamins and minerals, it is important to take care of the overall health of the body and maintain your nails always clean and hydrated”, the doctor reiterates.
Massaging your nails and cuticles with natural oils, such as coconut oil or castor oil, can also help stimulate growth and strengthen your nails.
«Another tip is to avoid biting them and always keep them protected with enamels and reinforcing bases», he concludes.
