The vet explains what tutors should do to get the animal to behave well during meals
Anyone who has a pet has probably already come across that moment where the animal watches you eat food. The animal’s gaze is usually so fixed as to cause a moment of sweetness or annoyance. But, in the end, why does this happen?
According to the veterinarian Alessandra Ventura da Silva, professor of Veterinary Medicine at the Cesucathe smell of food and the fact that we are chewing something arouse the animal’s curiosity.
“As part of the ‘pack,’ the pet always believes there might be a piece for him, if the owner has a habit of sharing food,” he says.
To prevent this from happening, it is important to look away, not talk to the animal and follow the food naturally during the meal.
“We must remember that it is for the pet’s health that we deny food during meals, as they are inappropriate foods or foods with excess calories, which can cause various health problems,” he underlines.
Remember: It’s for your pet’s health!
If there is a habit of sharing food at any time, from a snack to lunch or dinner, and the mentor is aware of this, it’s time to break the habit to avoid serious diseases such as obesity.
Even so, there are those who believe that withholding a piece of food from the pet can make it sick, however, the more likely thing is that it will get sick even if the guardian offers it to it.
“Some foods are prohibited for animals, such as onions, which are commonly used to flavor our meals, as well as foods with excess salt or other toxic substances,” he adds.
Ventura says the habit of ordering food isn’t unique to one race—that is, there are no races more likely to observe us during our meal. But there are some with a sweet tooth, who always want to eat, such as Golden Retrievers, Labradors and English Bulldogs.
“Even dogs that work with humans have this need to observe more frequently, but not to feed, but to work, as is the case with the Border Collie and the Australian Cattle Dog,” he says.
“Changing the habits of offering excessive food that is not recommended for pets is extremely important to prevent the increase in obese pets. These chronic diseases are serious, difficult to manage and lead to various other health problems that shorten the life of the kittens for us who observe them”, concludes the teacher.
