Who arrives at 3585 Rua da Consolação looking for Vatican bar, you might think you are at the wrong address. After all, as far as the court is concerned with the feats of the chef Eric Jacquinthe house in question does not appear to be any bar: the façade, in fact, indicates that Lvtetia, the Italian restaurant of the MasterChef judge, is located there.

But this is, in fact, the address: Bar do Vaticano, Jacquin’s new bet, follows the fashion of “secret bars” and is hidden in the basement of the restaurant.

To get there, you have to overcome some obstacles. First, she talks to the receptionist, who will ask you to wait there in Lvtetia until the time is right. When the time is right, you descend a well-concealed side staircase and walk through a long, carpeted corridor. It is then that you finally walk through a curtain and find yourself face to face with the bar: albeit windowless and a bit narrow, cozy and quite bohemian. The light is dim, with candles on the table, and everyone is very close. All of this together helps set the mood.

When asked about the concept of the bar, Jacquin agrees with the first impression of the taste in the space. “The concept of the bar is to offer a very intimate space, in dim light, even an almost secret environment in the capital, so that people can enjoy the night of São Paulo ‘in the dark’, with good music and incredible artists with the best drinks and beverages,” explains the chef. “It’s the real tompero of the Vatican. The Pope called me and said that he needed more cheerfulness in the Vatican, so I created the Vatican forum (laughs)”.

On the drinks menu, prepared in a bar that looks like it came out of a The Great Gatsbyyou can find an interesting variety of drinks.

From classics, such as negroni and aperol spritz, to house creations, such as A. Bocelli (gin, red fruit purée, sugar and egg white syrup, R$59), Veneza (tequila, Campari, red fruit purée, ginger syrup with pepper and egg white, R$43) and the Donatello (whiskey, lemon, sugar syrup, red fruit purée and balsamic vinegar, R$50).

The house also has snacks to accompany drinks, with highlights for small sandwiches. You can also order sweets from Lvtetia, if the house is open.

A space for concerts

Though he’s only now promoting Bar do Vaticano, Jacquin has owned the place since last year, when he opened Lvtetia. to the visit of taste at the Italian restaurant in 2022, the MasterChef judge said the bar was one of his main bets, but that he had yet to define with all the partners (his wife, Rosangela Jacquin, plus business couple Orlando and Silvinha Leone) which it would be the shape of the house. At that time the Bar do Vaticano was open on Fridays and Saturdays, with no other attractions.

It’s different now. Reminiscent of the Bar Brahma model, the house had the idea of creating seasons of presentations with different musicians. It has samba options every Wednesday, in May with samba player Ivo Meirelles. On Thursdays, also in May, it’s up to Tony Gordon, winner of The Voice, to present jazz. Also, every Friday and Saturday there is a live band and DJ Tony Montana. It is worth mentioning that a ticket price must be paid to enter the space on show days, starting at R$ 100.

And although at first it seems that everything will be chaotic due to the limited space, the experience is more than positive: there are good acoustics and a great sound system. At the Ivo Meirelles show, which he attended taste, everything went smoothly and people enjoyed themselves. Jacquin, who couldn’t be happier with the sellout and sambista show, at one point walked up to the table and asked, “Is there any place in São Paulo that looks like this?”, he recalls something similar.

“It’s an audience that likes the nightlife of São Paulo, who like good music, quality drinks and aperitifs, who like something more intimate, who prefer a more private place and not a show in a place sit in front of the artist and enjoy the night together with the musicians in a more discreet environment for couples and friends, and even the closest neighbors can take the opportunity to go downstairs and listen to quality music, have a tompero more in the night”.
