Hypertension is responsible for more than half of cardiovascular disease. Know the signs of high blood pressure
According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the Americas. Arterial hypertension, or high blood pressure, is responsible for more than 50% of these diseases. Therefore, World Hypertension Day (May 17) is an opportunity to alert the population to ways to prevent and diagnose the problem.

Does high blood pressure cause symptoms?
Diagnosis, incidentally, may be delayed, as the condition usually shows no symptoms. But, according to cardiologist Dr. Claudio Vieira Catharina, director of the coronary unit at IcaraĆ hospital and a member of the Brazilian and European societies of cardiology, some people may show signs. Are they:
- heachache;
- sleep disorders;
- Tiredness of efforts;
- excessive sweating;
- Dizziness;
- Visual slag (fireflies in sight).
According to the Ministry of Health, hypertension is a disease that attacks the blood vessels, heart, brain, eyes and can cause kidney paralysis. It occurs when the blood pressure measurement is often higher than 140 by 90 mmHg (or 14 by 9).
Risk factors
In 90% of cases the disease is a genetic inheritance from the parents. However, there are several factors that affect blood pressure levels, including:
- Smoke;
- Consumption of alcoholic beverages;
- Obesity;
- Fatigue;
- Large consumption of salt;
- High levels of cholesterol;
- Sedentary lifestyle.
Additionally, Claudio cautions that people over the age of 40 who are overweight and have a family history of hypertension should try to measure and learn about their blood pressure. Diabetics, people with high cholesterol, and smokers are also candidates.
How to prevent and live with high blood pressure
The cardiologist recommends some measures to prevent hypertension, such as adopting an active lifestyle with regular exercise, a low-salt and low-alcohol diet and control of body weight. “The genetic factor, however, is very strong,” he points out.
However, it is possible to live with high blood pressure in a healthy way. For that, you have to keep an eye on your health. “Hypertensive patients should prioritize weight monitoring and limit dietary salt intake. Regular exercise is also essential,” says Claudio.
For the specialist, knowledge and control of hypertension is very important, as it is directly related to stroke, heart failure and renal failure.
Furthermore, it is also a risk factor for myocardial infarction. “Controlling hypertension while saving lives is one of the biggest impacts on public health,” she points out.
