But what can artificial intelligence actually do for those who want to get pregnant? “Artificial intelligence is already well involved in many areas of human reproduction, especially for assisted reproductive technology procedures. It can help identify healthy and viable embryos”says the doctor.

A 2022 study published in Current Opinion in Obstetrics and Gynecology stated: “AI has been used to select embryos with high implantation potential, suitable ploidy status, to predict further embryo development, and to increase pregnancy and live birth rates.”. According to Dr. Fernando, AI can be used in many ways in fertility treatment, including:

Predictive modeling. Artificial intelligence can be used to analyze patient data and predict the likelihood of success for different fertility treatments.

Image analysis. AI can help identify the best embryos for implantation, after an analysis of images of embryos, such as those obtained during in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Personalized treatment plans. AI can use individual characteristics and medical history to come up with personalized treatment plans.

Monitoring and tracking. AI can be used to track and monitor the progress of fertility treatments.

Automation. AI can improve efficiency by automating certain tasks, such as scheduling appointments or ordering exams.

Clinical research. AI can be used to analyze large amounts of data from clinical trials to identify patterns and insights that can help improve fertility treatments.

The doctor. Fernando explains that all of these applications are in their infancy, and while there are many groups working on them, none of them are a standard of care yet. “That said, I am confident that AI will play a major role in the future of fertility care”points out.

Despite advances in prenatal medicine diagnosis, however, a large number of major malformations go undetected, and the standard treatment for estimating the outcome of delivery depends on “blind” clinical monitoring of labor, according to the doctor. The published literature on the use of AI suggests significant improvements in these areas.

“AI data can help healthcare professionals in a variety of situations, such as looking for signs of congenital diseases and determining the risk of preterm birth. AI can be used to analyze patient data and predict the likelihood of complications during pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes. AI can help analyze ultrasound images to detect potential problems”explains.

Similarly, AI can provide timely alerts to healthcare professionals if worrying signs are detected during monitoring. AI-based pregnancy tracking could help you achieve better outcomes, predict risk, and avoid complications during labor, a 2022 Mayo Clinic study suggested.

“Once validated with further research, we believe the algorithm will work in real time, meaning that every new data entry during a pregnant woman’s labor automatically recalculates the risk of a bad outcome,” designs dr. Ferdinand.

AI will not replace medical professionals. However, physicians could benefit in terms of better outcomes, reduced workload and reduced healthcare costs.
