According to zootechnician Rebeca Horn Vasconcelos, of Tijuca Alimentos, the egg has more than 50 nutrients including proteins, amino acids, vitamins and mineral salts. The addition of this mineral, however, has been made in poultry in recent years to make it even more nutritious.

“The process of enriching the eggs with selenium begins in the breeding laboratories, where the diet of the laying hen will be defined, which is able to transfer this increase in selenium to the egg”, explains the professional.

Benefits of selenium enriched eggs

The egg is a food that contains various minerals such as calcium, iron, zinc, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, sodium, as well as an expressive amount of selenium. There are approximately 15 mcg in one unit, which is 33% of an adult’s daily requirement.

As Rebeca explains, the enhancement of this mineral in food contributes to the improvement of health and well-being, as it helps in the prevention of degenerative diseases, Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular diseases and even carcinogens.

“Selenium also acts in the fight against free radicals that are formed spontaneously during the body’s metabolization process. Although their formation is common in situations of illness or stress, these radicals tend to increase and can cause changes in aging, in the cellular functioning and even in inflammation”, underlines the professional.

Can everyone eat?

In addition to being one of the most accessible protein sources for most Brazilians, eggs are very easy to include in the daily diet. However, not everyone can consume them.

“They have no consumption restrictions for the majority of the population, except for those who are allergic or intolerant to egg components”, points out the expert.

Therefore, the right thing is always to seek advice from a nutritionist to put together a food plan that meets the needs of each individual and personalized, thus avoiding possible health risks.
