According to Bárbara Murayama, gynecologist specializing in gynecological endoscopy at Unifesp and yoga teacher at Yoganaya, scientific data shows that 19% of women with endometriosis do not improve with conventional treatments. “Yoga, meditation, healthy eating, body movement, and sleep care are part of the treatment for pain relief and balanced health,” she adds.

What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a gynecological disease chronic benign, exclusively female, characterized by the development and growth of glands and endometrial stroma (tissue lining the inner layer of the uterus) on the outside of the uterus, forming cyst-like lesions (endometriomas) adhesions between organs and nodules.

This disease affects about 10% of women overall, with rates up to 50% in women with infertility (1 year or more trying to conceive without success). The highest reported prevalence is in women aged 35 to 44 years. The cause is multifactorial influenced and stimulated by female hormones, especially estrogen.

Through the practice of yoga it is possible to improve symptoms and quality of life

yoga as an ally

For the control of the disease, in addition to the hormonal clinical treatment prescribed by the gynecologist, non-hormonal treatment is also essential, which includes nutritional evaluation, pelvic floor physiotherapy, acupuncture, psychotherapy, regular physical activity and practice yoga, which is already described in the medical literature with a positive result. In some cases, surgical treatment may also be necessary.

Benefits of regular practice

Yoga therapy is one of the tools that can be part of the prevention and complementary treatment of endometriosis. Through the practice of various yoga techniques such as physical postures (asana), breathing postures (pranayama), meditation and relaxation, symptoms and quality of life can be improved.

“Evidence-based medicine already has some scientific studies demonstrating the benefit of these techniques as allies in the treatment of anxiety, depression and sleep disorders, which are common problems for patients with endometriosis, fibroids and adenomyosis,” concludes Bárbara Murayama .
