Model, journalist and former stage assistant of the extinct “Legendarios”, Lygia Fazio died on Wednesday night (31). The 40-year-old woman had been hospitalized for three weeks due to a cerebrovascular accident (CVA).
The stroke, in turn, was yet another consequence of the health problems that hit Lygia last year. It all started when the model underwent an application of industrial silicone and PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate), a plastic material in the form of microspheres, on her buttocks.
The procedure was unsuccessful, and the substances spread throughout Licia’s body, resulting in a series of infections. As a result, she had to have more surgeries and spent 100 days in the hospital trying to remove the substances from her body.
What are the risks associated with the use of PMMA?
As the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP) points out, PMMA should only be used to correct minor deformities and in patients with HIV-infected lipodystrophy. “Use for aesthetic purposes is not recommended”, points out the institution.
In a public note released last June, the Sbcp recalls that such use is “extremely dangerous” and “can cause early and late complications that are difficult to resolve”. Among these, the institution mentions the formation of nodules, masses and inflammatory and infectious processes, capable of causing “disastrous and irreversible” damage.
“According to what is reported in scientific articles 3,4, the most serious complications such as necrosis, blindness, embolism and death are more frequent with this product than with resorbable fillers, specifying that PMMA (which is non-absorbable), should NOT be used indiscriminately,” says the text.
Farewell to Lycia
Faced with the fatal outcome, Lygia’s body is veiled and cremated until 4pm this Thursday (1st), at the Valle dos Reis cemetery and crematorium. The space is located in Taboão da Serra, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo. The model leaves behind two sons, Davi and Thor.
