Ketchup on pizza, crunchy dough: what is the most controversial gastronomic crime?

The research has shown which gastronomic habits of tourists annoy Italians the most

Putting ketchup on pizza is an old controversy among Brazilians, but what do Italians think about it? A survey conducted by Bonusfinder Italia has defined which are the “gastronomic crimes” committed by tourists against Italian cuisine that most annoy Europeans.

The ketchup on the pizza obviously couldn’t be left out. The practice is present in the top 10, but apparently the Italians are more annoyed when the sauce is used in another recipe.

64.7% of the participants declared that putting ketchup on spaghetti is a “gastronomic crime”, and the habit was the most cited among the respondents. Paste ketchup is particularly unwelcome to Italians over 40, with over 70% disapproving of it.

Pineapple on pizza?

Secondly, the interviewees showed indignation at an American habit that is now old, but which still gives Europeans nightmares.

The use of pineapple on pizzas was considered a gastronomic crime by 62.4% of those interviewed. Flavors like California pizza and Havaiana pizza are popular in the United States, which use the ingredient mercilessly.

The “crimes” committed with the Italian dishes that occupy the next positions are related to the method of preparation, and not to specific ingredients.

Can you break the noodles?

Putting pasta in cold water before boiling annoys more than half of those interviewed. Breaking up longer pastas, like spaghetti and fettuccine, also annoys Italians.

In addition to ingredients and preparation methods, Italians are plagued by issues related not only to gastronomy, but to behavior: in particular, people who refuse to share meals irritate Europeans a lot. Of course, it’s not just Italians who are bothered by this, right?

The use of pasta deemed “inappropriate” for the dish was also one of the main complaints of the respondents, although this is a rather subjective matter.

The creme de latte carbonara, a common habit in Brazilian versions of the dish, was also in the top 10.
