Until then, the drugs were available through the program in two forms: free (asthma, diabetes and hypertension) and drugs in eight other categories offered in co-pay format – at up to 90% discount. See list below.
“This population will have free access to medicines indicated for the treatment of osteoporosis and contraceptives. Furthermore, with the expansion of the program, the beneficiaries of the Bolsa Familia will also have access to the 40 drugs available on the Popular Pharmacy of Brazil, which includes the treatment of 11 diseases. The initiative is expected to benefit 55 million Brazilians.
According to the ministry, the federal government resumes the program with the expansion of the free supply of medicines and the accreditation of new units in the most vulnerable municipalities. With the new qualifications that will be opened, the expectation is that the Popular Pharmacy, by the end of the year, will have units in 5,207 Brazilian municipalities. The program was relaunched this Wednesday by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), at an event in Pernambuco.
“Before Farmácia Popular, people went to UBS, they went to a health center, they were seen by the doctor, they got the prescription and they took it home. Many times they ended up dying with the prescription on the table, because they didn’t have it have money to buy it. buy the medicine. This will never happen again in our country. That’s why we decided to launch the program so many years ago. It was reduced by the last government, but now we are back with more strength, more medicine and capacity to meet all the needs of needy people in Brazil. The program Popular Pharmacy of Brazil also begins to offer all the medicines on the list free of charge indigenous population.
The Ministry of Health has also said it will facilitate access to the program for the indigenous population living in villages. “To avoid the displacement of this population, a community representative will be appointed who will take care of collecting the indicated drugs, without the need to have a CPF to be assisted”, reads the folder on the initiative which will be implemented in a pilot project in the Yanomami territory, in Roraima, and then gradually extended to other regions.
Popular Pharmacy of Brazil
Created in 2004, the program Popular Pharmacy of Brazil it is a complementary action of pharmaceutical assistance to the Unified Health System (SUS). Initially, drugs with lower prices were offered. In 2006, in the first expansion of the program, the Ministry of Health entered into a partnership with private network pharmacies and parapharmacies, establishing the “Aqui Tem Farmácia Popular” modality.
In 2011, the program began to offer the population free of charge medicines indicated for the treatment of three pathologies.

- Hypertension.

- Osteoporosis.

- DM II + Cardiovascular Diseases (over 65 years).
With the expansion, whoever receives the Bolsa Familia and also belongs to the indigenous population free access to the drugs listed for the aforementioned pathologies. In the case of contraceptives and osteoporosis, these two pathologies are now included in the free roll.
The list of the Farmácia Popular do Brasil program, which includes the treatment for 11 diseases, brings together 40 medicines, have more options of remedies depending on the pathology mentioned.
