A premature baby was the first patient infected with the superfungus Candida auris in the state of São Paulo, according to the Department of Health. He was born and is hospitalized at the Unicamp Women’s Hospital (Caism). The information comes from the newspaper Folha de São Paulo.
According to the hospital, the infection was confirmed on May 18, in preoperative tests on the baby. His clinical evolution has been good, despite his conditions associated with prematurity and low weight.
Called the “superfungus”, Candida auris can cause invasive and serious infections associated with high mortality. Furthermore, it can cause outbreaks in health services.
Despite this, the health unit reported that it had carried out a thorough investigation among other patients, but, so far, no other patients infected with Candida auris have been identified.
The hospital has also listed a number of hygiene measures to reduce the risks of contamination.

This is not the first case of Candida auris infection in Brazil. This year, the cases had only been registered in Pernambuco: there, between 2021 and 2022, there were 48 notifications of superfungus infection, the largest outbreak recorded in Brazil, according to the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation.
Before that, in 2020, the first Candida auris infection was recorded in Brazil, which occurred in a hospital in Bahia.
