Physical activity x physical exercise
“Exercise is conceptualized as the programmed repetitions of defined movements with the goal of body conditioning and performance. Examples: push-ups, sit-ups, jumps, squats and jumping jacks. That is, exercise carries the idea of systematize physical training”, said the professor of the Physical Education course of the UFSCar (Federal University of São Carlos) Ana Claudia Garcia in an exclusive interview for the sports life.
“The concept of physical activity arises from every movement you do for at least 15 minutes, which is able to increase your calorie expenditure. They should be encouraged by any health professional to change active behavior. These activities were previously called activities of daily living , like going to the supermarket, going up and down stairs and tending the garden,” adds Ana.

Garcia also added in a dialogue with the Sport Life report that only a professional evaluation can reveal what is or is not practicable for the novice subject or for those living according to a sedentary lifestyle. A fact that does not prevent her from mentioning the advantageous choice for those who are sedentary.
“For those who are sedentary, it is better to start walking, even during training, than to run. For beginners, high-intensity exercises are not recommended. This applies to both exercise and physical activity. Example: physical activity light to get out of the sedentary lifestyle to take care of gardening and not necessarily carry weights and carry weights”, guides the UFSCar professor.
The other consideration mentioned by Garcia is that activities and exercises can be gradually included for a “formerly sedentary person.” There’s also the detail that anyone’s education status is what will interfere with this life-changing transition.
Historical context
Exercise has emerged since ancient Greek times, a primeval time for what we call training. The concept reappeared at the end of the 19th century in relation to what we call the first methods of systematizing physical exercises, which are found within European gymnastic methods, a tribute to the Greek period.
This understanding of physical activity is recent. Thus, this achievement already illustrates its creation in the late 70s with the intention of thinking about the lifestyle change we are going through and taking into account the technological revolution.
Data
This agreement could interfere with the possible change of scenery in Brazil. Market intelligence firm Ipsos released research in the second half of 2021 and showed that Brazilians exercise three hours a week, a period that means half the global average of 6.1 hours.
The IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) published its work in 2017, whose thesis states that 51% of Brazilians do not exercise due to lack of time, 20.3% due to health problems or advanced age and 13.9% dislike or show no signs of making an effort.
