SOROCABA – The Secretary of Health of Campinasin the interior of São Paulo, he was notified on Wednesday 14 of another suspected case of Rocky Mountain spotted fever joint contract. There are now six cases in the city – four confirmed and two suspected – and four deaths, three with confirmed cause. The new case is a 40-year-old woman, a resident of Hortolândia, who attended the Feijoada do Rosa event, at the Fazenda Santa Margarida, in the Joaquim Egídio district, on 27 May.
According to the municipal file, the woman presented symptoms on June 10 and is hospitalized in a private hospital in Campinas. The lab test result is not out yet. This Wednesday morning the secretary had reported a fifth suspected case, of a woman who was at the show of the singer Seu Jorge, on the same farm. She was hospitalized on June 13, in Campinas, and is still awaiting test results to confirm the disease.
Of the four people who died, three: the 36-year-old dentist, residing in the capital, her boyfriend, the 42-year-old businessman and pilot, residing in Jundiaí, and a 28-year-old teacher, residing in Hortolândia – were victims of spotted fever. The fourth death, of a 16-year-old teenager, showed symptoms of the disease, but the cause is still under investigation. The two cases of hospitalized patients are also under investigation.. Everyone has attended the farm, which has suspended new events and is closed for a 30-day period.
The events already characterize an outbreak of spotted fever and the district of Joaquim Egídio is considered a risk area for the disease. The municipality of Campinas recorded two more confirmed deaths from Rocky Mountain spotted fever this year, which are unrelated to Santa Margarida. The Campinas region already has the largest record of cases of the disease in the country.
