The town hall of Campinas, in the interior of São Paulo, is investigating another suspected case of spotted fever. This Wednesday’s notification, the 14th, is the sixth disc in relation to the current outbreak of the disease in the region. The patient is a 40-year-old woman, a resident of Hortolândia, who was also in “Feijoada do Rosa”, on May 27, in the Fazenda Santa Margarida, in the district of Joaquim Egídio.
She presented symptoms on June 10, is hospitalized in a private hospital in Campinas and is awaiting the results of the laboratory test.
A fifth suspected case had already been notified to the Secretariat this Wednesday morning. A 38-year-old woman, who attended an event at the same farm on June 3 and started showing symptoms on June 10. She was hospitalized in Campinas on June 13 and is also awaiting confirmation of laboratory tests.
The other four cases are as follows:
- Mariana Giordano, 36, from São Paulo, and her boyfriend Douglas Costas, 42, from Jundiaí. The two died on June 8;
- Evelyn Karoline Santos, 28, from Hortolândia. He also died on June 8;
- Under investigation: Erissa Santana, 16, from Campinas. She died on June 13th.
They were all at the Fazenda Santa Margarida on May 27th. According to the municipal councilor for health, the event is configured as an outbreak of spotted fever. Joaquim Egídio district is mapped as a risk area for the disease.
Measures
Campinas City Hall announced today a series of measures to combat Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The initiative is a response to the outbreak of the disease in the Fazenda Santa Margarida and also extends the actions to the entire municipality. The Campinas region, with the highest number of cases in Brazil, is endemic for Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
Among the measures: the publication of a decree with the rules for businesses that organize events for a large audience in areas at risk; strengthening information for physicians and other health professionals; educational videos for wide publication; strengthening communication, information and mobilization actions against Rocky Mountain spotted fever in risk areas and public parks; inclusion of zoonoses in the municipality’s Arbovirus Control Committee; health surveillance alert on people who have attended the events at Fazenda Santa Margarida and may show signs and symptoms of the disease; and specific measures for the company involved in the outbreak, as required by an environmental and communication emergency plan.
As for the events at the Fazenda Santa Margarida, the owners of the establishment are also participating in actions to implement a plan against the spotted fever infection on the farm. The city hall also said the owners will not be held responsible for the outbreak.
