This year, 17 cases of Rocky Mountain spotted fever have already been confirmed in the state of São Paulo, with eight deaths.
The municipalities of Jundiaí and Santa Isabel, in the interior of São Paulo, have reported 11 suspected cases of spotted fever. According to the town halls, some of the people who may have contracted the disease attended a party in the Fazenda Santa Margarida, a rural region in the municipality of Campinas, where an outbreak of spotted fever was detected, which has already caused four deaths.
Seven suspected cases were reported in Jundiaí. According to the prefecture, so far they have not been confirmed and there are no hospitalized patients. Two of the suspected cases concern people who were at the Fazenda Santa Margarida and the others report having frequented green areas in Jundiaí and other cities.

“All notifications refer to people who were in Campinas, where other infections with the disease have been recorded. Blood samples were taken from the four patients and sent to the Instituto Adolfo Lutz, in São Paulo. Two are hospitalized and everyone is following the assistance of the municipal health service”informed the city hall.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever, also known as tick-borne disease, is a febrile infection of varying severity, with a high fatality rate. The disease is not transmitted from person to person, but through the bite of the star tick.
The Ministry of Health recommends that, when visiting higher risk regions, the person wears light clothing, which helps to more quickly identify the tick, which is dark in colour. It is also recommended to wear trousers and blouses with long sleeves and boots and to use repellents, with DEET, IR3535 and Icaridin as active ingredients.
