The beauty chip consists of a hormonal implant, considered anabolic, which promises to increase the amount of lean body mass, disposition and even the improvement of libido. Since 2021, however, the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) has vetoed the advertising of products containing gestrinone, a hormone present in the beauty chip.

The Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabology (SBEM) advises against the use of the beauty chip, which has been inappropriately adopted by women because it could also be used to stop menstruation.

However, there is no scientific evidence of the indication of gestrinone, the main substance of the plant, for treatments related to menstruation and menopause.

Celso Cukier, nutritionist at the São Camilo Hospital Network in São Paulo, explains that the use of hormone replacement is important during menopause for some women, but that they should not be used without medical confirmation of this need.

“The beauty chip is a type of hormone substitute that cannot be used for aesthetic purposes under any circumstances. The function of hormone replacement is to align the amount of hormones in a patient when they are lacking,” she comments.

The case of the former BBB Flay

The Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) also prohibits the use of anabolic treatments for aesthetic purposes, which have been disseminated by various bloggers on social networks. Former BBB Flay has publicly recounted his experience with the treatment, saying he gained more weight using the chip and had acne on his face.

“Hormone therapies are indicated only for patients who are malnourished, recovering from a health problem or who have a condition that causes a failure in endogenous production,” comments the nutrologist.

The experimental use of hormonal therapies without the authorization of the relevant bodies has also been prohibited by the CFM, as have courses and events that encourage the adoption of these therapies for better physical performance.

What is the beauty chip made of?

The main component of the beauty chip is a synthetic androgenic steroid hormone called gestrinone, which is approved in some countries for the treatment of endometriosis. However, treatments are always done orally, there is no evidence of the use of the hormone through an implant.

Its association with the increase in lean mass and the increase in disposition are related to various consequences such as acne, deepening of the voice, sweating, hair growth, changes in libido, menstruation and fertility, or even androgenetic alopecia, changes in heart and liver. .

Within this, it is important to think about long-term strategies to achieve goals such as weight loss and a healthier lifestyle, which can be accomplished with professional follow-up to guide the best type of treatment for every patient.

“The side effects, in this case, are greater than the supposed benefits. Bearing in mind that, ethically speaking, when a patient is prescribed a type of treatment, the benefits must outweigh the possible effects of that procedure or drug”, concludes Cukier.
