Ophthalmologist warns of habits that damage eye health and points out ways to preserve vision and eye health
It’s not just bad habits that get in the way of eye health. In fact, food also affects – and a lot – the well-being of the eyes and vision.
According to Dr. Fernando Cresta, ophthalmologist at the CBV-Hospital de Olhos, scientific studies have shown that supplements with lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamins C and E, copper and zinc are effective in preventing the progression of senile macular degeneration.
Fernandon indicates that these nutrients can be found in fruits and vegetables, such as carrots. In addition, other habits that improve vision include eating healthy, avoiding smoking and exposure to ultraviolet rays.
Bad habits that damage your eyesight
“On the other hand, reading or focusing on near vision for an extended and uninterrupted period can lead to eye strain, burning, redness and evaporative dry eye,” warns the specialist.
This is because there is a decrease in the flash rate. Therefore, it is important to take breaks in reading, look at the horizon and always remember to blink frequently, stresses the doctor.
Therefore, we must avoid smoking and exposure to ultraviolet light. “Ultraviolet A and B rays can predispose you to cataracts, pterygium, age-related macular degeneration, among other eye problems,” warns Fernando. The doctor also adds that scratching your eyes too much can lead to corneal problems, such as keratoconus.
“Most eye diseases can be prevented and best treated if diagnosed early. Make an appointment with your eye doctor at least once a year,” concludes the professional.
