Insituto Inhotim opens the gallery dedicated to Yayoi Kusama

The Japanese artist, known for her colorful and circle-filled works, will have two immersive installations at the contemporary art center

The largest contemporary art center in the world, the Inhotim Institute In Brumadinho will inaugurate its twentieth permanent gallery, dedicated to Yayoi Kusama. Opening on July 16, the new building will house two immersive installations by the Japanese artist, known for her colorful works filled with circles: Consequences of the obliteration of eternity (2009) and I’m here, but nothing (2000).

The buildings

Consequences of the obliteration of eternity, which means something like “consequences of eliminating eternity”, was produced by Yayoi Kusama on her 80th birthday and deals with topics related to spirituality and the finite world. The aim of the installation is for the viewer to enter a completely different universe than the “outside world”. The work is composed of mirrors and lanterns, creating a continuous mirage that fades as the visitor moves away. The lanterns were inspired by the Buddhist Tōrō Nagashi ceremony, which honors ancestors.

already installing I’m here, but nothing reminiscent of the living room of a house, made up of a sofa, television, table, chairs, picture frames and carpets. The environment is illuminated by black light and bright colored dots, a form present in most of Kusama’s works. Following the artist’s concept, the work can be perceived as a dissolution of the viewer into the environment itself. The title of the work, ” I’m here but there’s nothing“, translated into Portuguese, suggests this perception of loneliness and incompleteness.

Consequences of the obliteration of eternity AND I’m here, but nothing are new to the Inhotim Institute, but the contemporary art center was already exhibiting a third work by Kusama, the daffodil garden (Garden of Narcissus, in free translation). There are 750 stainless steel balls on a water surface which behave like a “kinetic carpet”: their position varies according to the wind. The work is on the terrace of the Burle Marx Center for Education and Culture.

A Yayoi Kusama Gallery will have almost 1,500 m² and will be located in Orange axisnext to Cosmococa Gallery. The garden of the main building will feature green, yellow and reddish bromeliads with natural circles on the leaves, recalling the artist’s trademark. Around the gallery, wooden benches will allow visitors to contemplate the landscape, the architectural project and rest their legs from the long walks needed to get around Inhotim.

Where? The Inhotim Institute is located in the municipality of Brumadinho60km from Belo Horizonte.

When? A Yayoi Kusama Gallery It opens on July 16th. From Tuesday to Friday, the museum is open from 9:30 to 16:30. Saturday, Sunday and public holidays the opening hours are from 9:30 to 17:30.

How much? The full ticket costs BRL 50. There is a half ticket of BRL 25 valid for identified students, over 60s and institution partners. Children up to five years do not pay.
