“Pelvic physiotherapy will identify the cause of the pain in the pelvis – which could be endometriosis, as was the case with singer Anitta. This untreated pain can be somatized and cause migraines, among other problems. What physiotherapy does is identify the problem to remove local pain, loosening the surrounding muscles,” explains Márcia.
WHAT IS PELVIC MIGRAINE?
Pelvic migraines are pain or tension disorders, which include one or more symptoms such as genital, rectal or abdominal pain and can increase these symptoms when sitting down, during or after sexual intercourse and can accompany dysfunctional symptoms of increased urinary frequency , or even decrease, hesitancy when urinating, constipation and even limited mobility.
It occurs chronically and progressively, leading to suffering and decreased quality of life. The characteristic of this pain is sometimes described as stabbing, stabbing, searing, burning, with neural imaging, and may even radiate to other areas.
Pelvic migraine is also described in the literature as chronic pelvic pain, but when we describe the symptoms, patients understand it better as migraine, since the perception of this muscle tension only occurs when there is physiotherapeutic intervention.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES?
“Most of the time, the clinical examinations may appear absolutely normal, not corresponding to the symptoms presented. What these patients have in common with tension pain are long periods of sitting and low quality of consciousness in the intimate region. But the cases of Endometriosis, trauma, surgical procedures and even postpartum injuries can be the main cause, namely: dysfunctions in the pelvic girdle region can affect the functioning of this area, leading to symptoms of tension, or the opposite also occurs.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
“In women, the symptoms of pain usually occur during sexual activity, and alterations in the elimination of feces and urine are also frequent. tensions and emotions, it is common to have the perception of tension in the shoulders, but it is not noticeable to most people, tension in the pelvic region.”
WHAT ARE THE TREATMENTS FOR PELVIC MIGRAINE?
“Being a neurological and chronic pain condition, the treatments offered may be for symptom management, such as anti-inflammatories and/or medications for this purpose. However, improvement of the condition becomes effective after identifying the root causes, targeting its solution. An important therapy in these cases is always the education of the patient in pain management, aiming to improve the muscles of the pelvic floor, reducing the tensions involved and favoring the functions of elimination of urine and faeces and the improvement of sexual function is: knowledge of the functions of the pelvis and its muscles, understanding the control of these functions and these muscles are essential for effective treatment.”
HOW TO PREVENT PELVIC MIGRAINE?
“A healthy lifestyle can be seen as a prevention option. With stressors in everyday life, the pelvic floor muscles can become tense and this migraine develops. I would like to highlight knowing your body, moving, drink water, sleep well and avoid sitting for long periods”.
