The “Morada do Samba” environment is a partnership between Marcelo Salum and Casa Riachuelo for CASACOR São Paulo 2023.
After creating an environment in honor of Atilio Baschera and Gregorio Kramer, in 2022, Marcello Salum takes on a new challenge: enhancing the African and Brazilian cultures, having as a starting point the samba and as main partner Casa Riachuelo, a northeastern brand whose main purpose is to generate connection and offer products that awaken the desire to transform the home into a refuge.

Thus was born the “House of Samba”space that marks the architect’s ninth participation in CASACOR, being the fourth in the São Paulo edition of the event.
“As a 100% Brazilian company, there would be no better way to honor one of the main symbols and intangible cultural heritage of the country.
We believe in the power of music to generate conversations through not only lyrics but also the feelings they evoke and the experiences they provide. The atmosphere of Salum translates the Brazilian and the strong influence of the samba roots and has the power to take us on a journey through history, as well as through a song,” says Edgard Nicola Sanches, commercial director of Casa Riachuelo.
Salum has a great bond with music in general, but his childhood memories, during the summer holidays, are always interspersed with samba, with family moments, including the Carnival parades, which he watched on TV.
The architect was transfixed by the colours, by the wonderful costumes: “it’s a rhythm that moves me”, he declares. So, the idea was to bring all these references, this strength, joy and rhythm to your project in CASACOR São Paulo.
In his projects, Salum always creates by looking for the golden section. And this would be no different: it already appears in entrance porch of the space and its distribution, realized in three moments: one rooma central space with two living, dining and kitchen areas and, finally, a bedroom with bathroom and office.
Color palette
As a feature of Salum’s work, the highlight of this space is the color mix and detailed production and this helps to tell the story of the environment.
In this regard, Casa Riachuelo borrows the sophistication and timelessness of the collection signed with brand Almost vintageseen in pottery for plates, bowls and cups in shades of green, blue and orangeand organically combined with other pieces from the Autumn-Winter collection, such as the assorted bowls and baskets.
The colors were defined based on the choice of floors. Three different models, by Ceusa: Easy, (which bears the colors – three shades of coral and three of green), Retro (a decorated tile, which refers to old farms); and Fiocchi, which refers to the typical carnival sugared almonds.
Then, these colors reach the walls, painted in shades, in two different palettes: the coral and greenwhich also appear on the covering of some walls, by panels with designs inspired by the Ashanti culture, more precisely in the geometric shapes of the Adinkra symbols – made by Duratex, based on a design by the Marcelo Salum studio – and applied to specific walls, which frame some works of art art.
Artwork
The choice of artwork is of great importance in the project. To compose the environment, some masks – a very representative element of African culture – will be provided by the collection of the Pangea museum. It is also worth mentioning the by Emerson Rocha, inspired by a photograph by Alberto Henschel taken in 1839, in Bahia. In this work by Rocha, the artist “relocates” this figure, taking into account the context of the republic which, since its proclamation, has been governed by white, Christian men.
The project also leads to screen at the entrance and two sculptures by Daniel JorgeTHE painting of a samba wheelmade exclusively by the artist Louis Pasqualiniplus one oratory of São Jorge by Juliano Aguiar, photographs by Juliana Hofmann, Bruno Jungmann, Mario Cravo Neto, Carlos Vergara and the painting by Maurício Adinolfi (the latter three represented by the Bolsa de Arte gallery), among others.
Furniture
As for the mix of furniture used, the creations of the studio Marcelo Salum and Estúdio Fresa, by Salum and Frederico Cruz stand out, whose inspiration comes from the work of Rubem Valentim, and which brings influences from African culture and its religious symbols, giving go up to two armchairs and two benches.
There is no shortage of novelties by Roberta Banqueri alongside antique pieces by Arnaldo Danemberg and Galeria Teo, juxtaposed with furniture by Jader Almeida (Sollos), Studio Ambientes.
Marcelo Salum’s studio has taken care of everything down to the smallest detail and also signs the handles on all the doors, from the bedroom to the kitchen. In lighting, LED lights contribute to sustainability and highlight the creations of Cristiana Bertolucci and the lighting project, created by Ouse Iluminação.
