What witches look like in The Witcher season 3: now viewers hate this series

New episodes of The Witcher starring Henry Cavill have been released on Netflix. Within days of premiering, the series received hundreds of negative reviews. The plot is surprisingly different from Andrzej Sapkowski’s saga – and the Hollywood screenwriters seem to have completely ignored the book’s description of the characters.

In 2019, The Witcher became Netflix’s main cinematic bombshell. Yesterday’s “superman” Henry Cavill instantly topped the ratings of hottest actors. Well, everyone still sings the Bard Buttercup’s song about a minted coin!

Of course, there were already a lot of malcontents. At times, the series was very different from the legendary computer game series The Witcher, which glorified Sapkowski’s magical saga. In addition, the series did not take into account the peculiarities of Slavic mythology. But the world of Netflix’s The Witcher has become much more inclusive – which matches big trends in modern cinema.

Fans praised the series for portraying Henry Cavill as a dark and taciturn Geralt of Rivia. Balagur Dandelion performed by Joey Baty also charmed everyone. But audiences complained a lot more about the female characters.

In 2019, many were disappointed with Anya Chalotra, who played Geralt’s beloved witch, Yennefer. The audience said that the actress did not have enough spark: her image seems too soft for such a passionate and insidious heroine like Yen.

The appearance of another mistress of the witcher, the witch Triss Merigold, has long been discussed. In the books and games, Triss is portrayed as pale and red-haired, while in the series she was played by a mulatto actress.

By the third season, it became abundantly clear that the creators of The Witcher didn’t even plan to focus on portraying Sapkowski’s heroines. There’s simply no other way to explain such a selection of actresses who played witches in the third season. Meanwhile, the heroines’ game prototypes are considered canonical – and exactly follow the book’s descriptions of the witches’ appearance.

Outraged viewers have already left plenty of angry comments on social media. The actresses themselves also caught some of the hate. So Safiya Ingar, who played the witch Keira Metz, has already responded to criticism – and accused The Witcher fans of a narrow and lustful portrayal of female characters.

“I’m not white or blonde. I don’t have huge boobs. I’m not Keira from the game. I may not be ‘your’ Keira, but I put my heart and soul into this role! Please try to look beyond your ideas,” the actress wrote on her blog.

Incidentally, The Witcher showrunners themselves long ago stopped commenting on the show’s stark departure from the book’s plot and heavy character overhaul. A few years ago, one of the writers told Insiders that the team didn’t like Sapkowski’s books – that’s why they decided to drastically redo the plot. It is said that this is why a big fan of Sapkowski’s works, Henry Cavill, leaves the project. And he leaves his role for Liam Hemsworth.

Well, we are eagerly waiting for the fourth season. Still, due to the replacement of the main actor, it promises to bring many more surprises than non-canonical witches!
