1. KNOW THE RESTRICTIONS
Anyone can fly, however, if it is a newborn baby up to seven days old, a medical certificate must be presented to the company up to 48 hours before the flight departure informing about the health conditions of the mother and the baby.
2. UNDERSTAND RATES
In Latam, children up to 1 year traveling on their lap do not pay the ticket domestic flights . Already inside international flights, pay 10% of the adult fare, plus tax. In both cases, there is the possibility that the child will travel in his or her own seat, provided that a full ticket is purchased and that a seat approved for air travel (Child Restraint System – CRS) is used. The same applies to children aged 2 and over, who must travel in their own seat and comply with safety requirements. Remember that each adult can travel with up to two infants, as long as one of them has its own seat.
3. DOCUMENTATION
In local flights: children under 12 can travel by presenting a birth certificate; over this age the identification document must be accompanied by a photograph, which can be the original or a certified copy.
In international flights: regardless of age, you must have a valid passport and, if the destination or connecting country requires it, a visa; in the case of Mercosur countries the passport can be replaced by the original RG with photo. In both cases, as required by the authorities, the identity document must prove – with the same name – the parentage or kinship of the minor with the accompanying major.
4. DEFINE THE RESPONSIBLE ACCOMPANYER
In local flights: Within Brazil, infants and children aged 0-15 must travel with a father, mother or guardian, a family member up to the third degree of age (proven) or an adult authorized by the father, mother or guardian. People over the age of 16 can travel alone.
In international flights: Infants and children aged 0-12 must fly with 1) both parents or a guardian, 2) one parent (if the other parent authorizes it with notarized signature) or 3) an adult notarized by both parents or guardian. Passengers between the ages of 12 and 17 must travel with a relative up to the third degree or unmarried person of legal age, provided there is proof of parentage or legal responsibility. Only people over the age of 18 can travel alone on flights abroad without the need for authorisation.
5. UNDERSTAND WHAT IS EMBARKATION OF UNACCOMPANIED MINORS
Latam offers assistance to children from 8 to 18 years of age and who are in possession of express authorization to travel alone. Before the trip, the persons in charge must complete the authorization form (AEV) and present it at the airport together with the minor’s documents. The company also offers an Unaccompanied Minor service, which includes real-time travel tracking with the Child Tracker tool. The rental of the service is mandatory for children aged between 8 and 12 traveling alone and must be requested up to 48 hours before the flight through the LATAM Contact Center.
6. TRAVEL BY CHILDREN/TEENAGERS WHO ARE ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM
Latam has the Autism Double Checked certification and is also part of the Sunflower Lanyard program, an initiative that aims to discreetly and voluntarily facilitate the self-identification of people with “invisible” disabilities through a green lanyard with a sunflower design.
7. REQUEST SPECIAL SERVICES IN ADVANCE
On international flights it is possible to request in advance through the Contact Center the cot and special foods for babies and children. For the cradle, the request must be made up to four hours before the flight and the infant must weigh up to 10 kilos and measure less than 71 centimeters. As for food, the company offers a menu for children over the age of two which must be requested up to 48 hours before boarding. It is worth noting that feeding the children is the responsibility of the accompanying passenger.
8. PERSONAL ITEMS AND BAGGAGE ALLOWANCE
The attendant can bring a small bag or backpack into the cabin as long as it does not exceed the maximum permitted dimensions of 45x35x20 centimeters (height, width and length), as well as a safety object, such as an approved chair or a folding/folding trolley (base and high chair). If, due to space constraints, the items cannot be accommodated in the cabin, they will be shipped free of charge. It’s worth noting that the child fare doesn’t include baggage, but can be purchased at a discount up to six hours before your flight.
9. ARRIVE EARLY AT THE AIRPORT
Arrive at the airport in advance with the necessary documentation and check-in. Priority boarding is available to all passengers accompanied by children under 2, just show up in the priority line in front of the boarding gate.
Many of the suggestions mentioned here, mainly regarding the documentation of the child and responsible adult, are valid for other Brazilian airlines, but you should consult them to understand if there is a specific procedure.
