Supportive belly: discover the method used by Naomi Campbell

Naomi is just one of the celebrities who have turned to the supportive belly to become a mother. Understand how the method works

British model Naomi Campbell, 53, recently announced the birth of her second child, who was gestated through a supportive belly. This technique, also known as a replacement uterus, is one of the treatments performed by women who cannot get pregnant. Furthermore, it is an option for same-sex couples who wish to have children without adopting.

In Brazil, the temporary transferee of the uterus must belong to the family of one of the cohabitants up to the fourth degree. That is, she may be a mother, daughter, grandmother, sister, aunt, niece, or supportive cousin. And, if there is no relative to carry the baby, it is permissible to carry out supportive tummy tuck in a woman who is not a family member, but the approval and authorization of the Regional Council of Medicine is required.

When is belly support an option?

The supportive tummy is a treatment option for women who have had a hysterectomy (when the uterus is removed). Also, for those born with uterine malformation (infantile, rudimentary uterus or congenital absence of uterus) incompatible with pregnancy, and also for those who have any condition that prevents pregnancy, such as age.

It is worth noting that the supportive belly is also a technique that can be used in the case of homoaffective couples.

“Certainly a natural pregnancy, at 50, when the woman is already in menopause, has rare possibilities. In order not to use absolutist terms always or never, we can say that the possibilities are practically nil,” explains Dr. Maria do Carmo Borges de Souza, member of the Advisory Committee of the Brazilian Association of Assisted Reproduction (SBRA) and the Latin American Network of Assisted Reproduction (REDLARA).

And, even with the use of assisted reproductive techniques, the success of the procedures can be greatly compromised when there are no more oocytes. “Women who wish to get pregnant in a more mature stage should anticipate freezing their eggs while they are still in the reproductive stage, only then will we be faced with a more concrete expectation,” says the expert.
