Let those who have never heard it cast the first stone eating at night makes you fat. The truth is that this is a doubt that still echoes in the minds of many people who want to lose weight, but who don’t give up on the last meal of the day.
But, in the end, is it true or not? Subsequently, the Endocrinologist and Metabologist Tassiane Alvarenga explain!
Eating at night getting fat?
According to Tassiane, the human body’s biological clock is controlled by a region of the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus.
“We humans are designed to stay awake during the day and sleep at night. So several studies have shown that night workers or people who stay up at night with insomnia or difficulty sleeping are more likely to gain weight, have obesity and metabolic issues, such as diabetes, fatty liver, and cholesterol,” she points out.
Therefore, some studies have been conducted with the concept of eating with a limited time of eight hours. Two groups were evaluated in them:
- First group: People who have their first meal at 8am and their last meal at 4pm.
- Second group: people who have their first meal at 12:00 and the last at 20:00.
In conclusion, the researchers noted that, even with the same calorie consumption, those who ate earlier had a faster metabolism. Moreover, people from the first group also did not gain weight, as well as losing weight more easily.
“That is, studies have shown that it is best to eat during the day, while our hormones and our biology are active to burn the calories consumed,” sums up Tassiane.
From that beginning, the practitioner has listed four habits to practice at night.
Tips for not gaining weight at night
Sleep 7 to 9 hours
Two to three hours before bed, do sleep hygiene: no lights, no cell phones, and no food.
Have a feeding window of 8 to 10 hours a day
“The sooner you start, the better. This can have decent weight benefits and big metabolic benefits, such as diabetes and heart disease risk,” she says.
After waking up, wait an hour to eat
“As soon as we wake up, melatonin is still high and that interferes with insulin secretion,” she explains.
Try to get at least 30 minutes of exercise
It can be a light walk in the fresh air in the sunlight, for the body to understand what day is and what night is.
