This beautiful colored chair is called Asariand is the latest collaboration between Herman Miller and the designer Naoto Fukasawafrom Tokyo. Inspired by organic shapes, his name means “seafood” in Japanese. These lines appear in the shape of the back of the chair. Was Asari inspired by sea creatures? How was this concept born during the creative process?

The inspiration for the shape of this chair didn’t come from a mollusk. In the design sector, the shape of a symmetrically divided and joined oval sphere it is usually called shell. Since each segment of the cushion is divided like a shell, Herman Miller’s team created the Asari concept. I really like that name.

How do you think Asari fits into the post-pandemic workplace? And how did that environment influence your design?

The project started five years ago with the expectation that we would design it in a user-friendly format that could be used in a more familiar environment. And as the COVID-19 epidemic spread across the globe and the work-from-home lifestyle caught on quicklymy predictions became even clearer.

3. Could you tell us more about the idea of ​​having eight colors that can be mixed? Why was personalization important in this piece?

It is possible to customize the furniture more fabrics and leathers, not just with eight colours. Compared to the homogeneous functional needs of an office, it is obvious that it is better to have more color and material options as a personal object when used at home.

Mr. Fukasawa has written about his design philosophy, which considers people’s unconscious behavior as an impetus for design. Could you tell how Asari’s design reflects these concepts?

I’ve seen situations where people don’t just sit down, but stand up and talk to each other, placing their hands on the back of the Asari chair and feeling the contact as they talk. This is an indication that the very shape of the Asari chair subconsciously encourages the action of its wielder.
