The dermatologist warns about the dangers of using cosmetics that are past their expiration date
It’s no secret that makeup products have long been on people’s favorite list. So much so that this market niche grows dramatically every year, and brands never get tired of making new products available to consumers.

But do you usually check, disciplined, the expiration date of that wonderful (and very expensive!) foundation, that incredible lipstick or that eyelash mask that leaves you with a screaming look? The fact is that most people rarely bother to check whether the product is expired or not, especially with the daily rush.
Consequences of using expired products
Using expired makeup is a big mistake that can bring unpleasant consequences. According to dermatologist Dr. Luann Lôbo, full member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD) and the Brazilian Society of Dermatological Surgery (SBCD), cosmetic products and make-up, if used after their expiration date, can cause skin irritations, such as redness, itching, itching and peeling. Other than that, they generally don’t deliver the intended result.
“Cosmetics and tricks must be used by the expiration date. This period is about how long the unopened product will remain viable. After opening, attention must be paid to the ‘useful life’, which corresponds to the time the product will remain viable after being exposed to the environment,” explains the doctor.
Duration of makeup
According to Dr. Luann Lôbo, after a product has been opened for use, it becomes more susceptible to environmental conditions, such as humidity and/or contaminants (fungi, bacteria). “The useful life of a foundation, a lipstick, a primer or any other type of make-up, after being opened for use, is usually also indicated on the product label, usually with a drawing and the indication how many months does that product remain suitable for use after the seal has been removed and the substance has been exposed to the environment,” says the expert.
What to do if the product irritates the skin?
What to do if you use an expired product and start having strange reactions or some type of allergy? “The first measure when you notice any kind of irritation is to remove the immediately face substanceusing running water and a mild, preferably liquid soap,” warns Dr. Luann Lôbo.
Do not use after the expiration date
For the doctor, the worst cosmetic products to use after the expiration date are, in fact, make-up and sunscreens. “Makeup tends to be more prone to contamination from fungi and bacteria. This can lead to more serious skin infections in addition to irritation. And in the case of sunscreen, which has a protagonist in skin care day, the product loses effectiveness after the expiry date,” he specifies.
eye allergy
Women, in particular, have make-up as part of their daily routine, and they don’t give up on enhancing their beauty with the most diverse products. The administrator Letícia Perfetto, 31, usually puts on makeup, on average, five times a week.
For her, the darlings of a basic make-up are the liquid paper, blush and mascara. And it was precisely the mask (probably expired) that once caused a big problem for Letícia.
“I had a very strong eye allergy, a bacteria, like a sty. It was very uncomfortable, itchy and hurt a lot. I went to an ophthalmologist and he told me to stop using all makeup products and even contact lenses. I used warm compresses and saline cleansing on the region four times a day,” she says.
Look at the expiration date
Journalist Melina Cabral de Souza, 32, is a fan of mascara and concealer and is always aware of the expiration date. “I always look at the expiration date on the products I use on my eyes, because the region is more delicate. Even liquid foundation I usually check if it’s expired, because when the expiration date passes, the texture changes,” she says.
“I pay close attention to changes in liquid products. For example, mascara tends to dry out and foundation changes color. I think because it’s liquid, I’m more afraid of causing something to my skin than powder. I’ve never had any allergies, but I always keep an eye on the expiration date written on the packaging of liquid cosmetics,” she adds.
