You finished your bodybuilding workout, and when it came time to change, you noticed a purple patch on your skin that wasn’t there before. You soon try to recall any blows you took at the scene, but the bruise seems to have arisen spontaneously. Could exercise be the cause?

According to the vascular surgeon Aline Lamaitamember of the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery, it is unlikely.

“These purple spots after training usually appear in patients who have what we call capillary fragility, that is, they bruise more easily, a very common feature in people who have a tendency to varicose veins and varicose veins,” he explains.

“In these cases, any more intense effort or gross contact that puts pressure on the vessels, such as when exercising with bodybuilding machines, can cause these vessels to rupture resulting in extravasation of blood, leading to the appearance of purple spots, mainly when the patient is menstruating or swollen,” adds the doctor.

It’s not bodybuilding’s fault

The specialist reiterates that it is not the fault of bodybuilding training, which should not be neglected, because, in fact, the practice contributes to the improvement of circulation.

“Because it consists of more intense exercises, bodybuilding makes the heart more active and healthy, improves blood flow, normalizes blood pressure and fights cholesterol, thus preventing varicose veins and thrombosis and protecting the body from cardiovascular diseases,” he points out.

However, if you notice bruising after exercising, it’s worth seeing a vascular surgeon for an evaluation, as it’s possible that you have a predisposition to varicose veins. And, in these cases, training should be carried out with particular care and accompanied by a physical education professional to prevent the appearance and worsening of varicose veins.

“For example, in people predisposed to varicose veins, the habit of holding their breath to lift heavy loads can increase intra-abdominal pressure, which in turn reduces venous return from the legs to the heart. In this way, the blood accumulated in the legs ends up increasing the pressure inside the veins of the region, which undergo dilation and give rise to varicose veins”, warns Aline.

There are other causes of spontaneous bruising

But predisposition to varicose veins isn’t the only cause of spontaneous bruising, so consulting a specialist is essential not only to check which exercises are ideal for you, but also to identify the cause of the problem.

“Spontaneous bruising can mean that platelets or blood clotting factors are impaired. And the alert should be even greater when, in addition to the bruises, there are bleedings in other parts of the body, such as gums and nose, but also fever, weakness or weight loss”, underlines the vascular surgeon.

The use of drugs also affects

In addition to the predisposition to varicose veins, the use of drugs such as aspirin and conditions such as acute leukemia, bone marrow aplasia and infectious diseases, including dengue and yellow fever, can favor the appearance of spontaneous hematomas.

“And some of these diseases, like acute leukemia, are serious and need to be diagnosed as early as possible so that treatment can be started right away. Therefore, when you notice the random appearance of bruises, it is advisable to consult a doctor as soon as possible. Only he will be able to carry out an assessment and correctly diagnose the problem”, concludes Aline Lamaita.
