Return of the terrifying phenomenon to theaters
After being kidnapped, Finny, now 17 years old, struggles to get back to normal life, while nothing and no one can stop Gwen, his 15-year-old sister. But an evil phone starts ringing in the teenager’s dreams, where he keeps seeing three boys chasing him through the mountains.
Determined to put an end to these nightmares and uncover the mystery, Gwen convinces her brother to go there despite the blizzard that has hit the station. But there he discovers the terrible truth behind the bond between the Seeker and his family. Then two teenagers must face a killer who has been made almost invincible by death and whose fate is more connected than they could have imagined…
With a handsome 3.5-star rating from the AlloCiné community and over 400,000 admissions in France, Black Phone has established itself as one of the most important horror films of the year in 2022. Confirmation of a sequel in early 2023 naturally made fans of the first Opus happy, especially when the entire team from the first part announced their participation in the project. So with the blessing of author Joe Hill – whose work was adapted into the first film – filmmaker Scott Derrickson (Sinister) began producing this new episode, which still stars Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw as Finn and Gwen Shaw. However, one announcement created a surprise: the return of the great Ethan Hawke as the Seeker, although he was defeated and killed by Finn at the end of the first opus…
Good news for horror fans: After more than three years of waiting, Black Phone 2 finally hit theaters this week and promises to be one of the biggest hits of Halloween 2025. Did Scott Derrickson and his team rise to the challenge of a successful sequel?
A relaxing yet confident dive into fantasy
Black Phone is set in a small town in Colorado and in the basement of a particularly terrifying child killer, a sort of modern bogeyman: Catcher. Behind closed doors, sticky and crunchy, this first opus, through the realism of its horror mechanisms, approached such works as Silence of the Lambs, Seven or even Zodiac.
The big news in part two? Immerse yourself in a perfectly imagined, completely fantastical story on the edge of reality. If this turn turns out to be coherent and effective, as it already began in the first Black Phone – where the ghosts of children helped the young hero – it will also make it possible to plausibly justify the return of the antagonist who is supposedly dead, and even stronger. Cut off from the domain of the living, the Seeker now stalks its victims in their dreams, robbing them of their little respite and tormenting them.

This fantastical, almost dream-like journey gains extra power by moving the setting of the story from a gray suburban town to the snow-capped mountains of Colorado. Caught in the middle of a blizzard, the heroes are struck by terrifying visions, overcome with fatigue, and forced to take advantage of the sunlight for a few hours to plan a counterattack…
If it takes its fantastic turn and multiplies new references (shining to name just one title), the Black Phone saga still retains what made its first opus special: the ghostly ringtones, primarily the behind-closed-doors taste and, above all, the violence of its antagonist. If at first he enjoyed observing the victims, this time the seeker seems determined to inflict suffering on them, in a sequence forbidden in France under the age of 16: the ax blows, the hemoglobin spreads and the characters scream, as never before, in pain and fear.

A warm ode to family and acceptance
If this new opus promises to be perfect for autumn, with its terrifying plot and its frozen setting, it also has something to warm hearts. Indeed, the deep bond between Finn and his sister Gwen grows even stronger four years later. Closer than ever, the show’s kids play — like all good teenagers — but also share beautiful moments of solidarity. Especially since this new adventure should teach them more about the death of their mother, who disappeared before the events of the first episode.

While Gwen encourages her older brother to understand her trauma, Finn is more determined to protect his sister from the tragedies he experienced, willing to do anything to protect her from the same suffering. When he is targeted by the Seeker, Finn must redouble his efforts to put his insecurities aside and trust Gwen, who is deeply convinced that he can defeat their enemy. Will they be able to overcome his invincible ghost?
A gamble for Scott Derrickson, who delivers an ambitious but successful sequel with Black Phone 2, which will now be discovered in cinemas.
