The most expensive bonbon in the world costs more than 40,000 reais; understand why

Created by chef Daniel Gomes, the chocolate is on sale in a Lisbon boutique

Skyrocketing prices are common in the world of luxury goods, but some products go over the top. Created by Portuguese chef Daniel Gomes, the most expensive bonbon in the world certainly joins the ranks of the most exaggerated. Nicknamed “Glorious”, the gourmet chocolate costs almost 8,000 euros – equal to more than 40,000 reais.

The bonbon is diamond-shaped and contains Valrhona equatorial dark chocolate, saffron threads, Perigord white truffle, white truffle oil, Madagascar vanilla, as well as 23-karat gold flakes and leaf.

The absurd price is not only due to the sweets: the box contributes a lot to the value of the bonbon. The wooden base is engraved in gold with the serial number and has one, is covered with Swarovski crystals and pearls and closed with a golden ribbon. Yet the bonbon alone costs 3,900 euros, about 20,000 reais.

Initially, the bonbon was made only to be displayed at exhibitions. In May of this year, the product began to be sold at the newly opened Companhia Portugueza do Chocolate boutique in the lobby of the Corinthia Lisbon hotel.

Companhia Portugueza do Chocolate is chef Daniel Gomes’ brand of artisanal chocolate, surprisingly selling sweets at relatively affordable prices. Glorious is in the “gourmet products” section of the site.
