The actress Elizabeth Olsen (WandaVision) stated that he no longer intends to participate in productions from major studios that do not have a guaranteed theatrical release. In an interview with InStylethe star known for playing Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe criticized the trend of films going straight to streaming, without showing in theaters.
“If a film is made independently and then sold to streaming, that’s fine. But I don’t want to do something where [o streaming] be the end of everything”, declared Olsen. “I think it’s important for people to come together as a community, to see other people, to be in a space together. That’s why I like sports — it’s powerful to see people come together for something that excites them. These days, we don’t even do in-person castings anymore.”
The speech reflects an increasingly common position among actors and filmmakers who defend the value of the collective experience of cinema. Olsenwho began his career in independent productions such as Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011), stated that he feels comfortable working on small films that are eventually purchased by streaming companies — but reinforced that his desire is to see these works on the big screen.
Since her last appearance as Wanda Maximoff in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), the actress has dedicated herself exclusively to independent productions. She starred in the drama The Three Daughters (2023), from Netflix, the dystopian thriller The Assessment (2024) and is expected to appear in the romantic comedy Eternityfrom the A24. Only the first had a limited release in theaters before arriving on the platform.
Despite the change in focus, Olsen maintains affection for the period in which he was part of Marvel. “Making these movies is fun, kind of silly. We are adults playing on a playground. We’re flying, throwing things with our hands”, he told the magazine. “It’s a character I played for more than ten years. It’s good to let it rest, but I end up missing it and want to go back. I would live this again.”
The actress also highlighted the collective side of superproductions, something that, for her, comes close to the sensation she seeks in the cinemas. “It’s a community. There are hundreds of people working together, with a common goal. The work of the visual effects artists, the stunt teams, the camera… all of it has soul and spirit. I care about what I do, and so does everyone there.”
