“By the use of jump, the knee is placed in an awkward position requiring continuous flexion. This strain wears down the patellar cartilage leading to chondromalacia (chondropathy), a disease whose symptoms include knee pain that gets worse when walking up or down stairs. Kneeling, squatting or sitting with legs crossed can also cause pain,” says Dr. Marcos Cortelazo, orthopedic specialist in knee and sports traumatology, member of the Brazilian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (SBOT).

Reason for this problem

The doctor. Marcos Cortelazo explains that the damage occurs more seriously in those who usually work and walk a lot with this type of heel. “In a normal walk, the body absorbs the impact of the stride evenly. This balance allows you not to damage the joints of the ankles and knees. Jumps, on the other hand, cause more imbalance and require greater knee flexion”, explains the doctor. By leaving the toes on the floor and the heel lifted, these shoes put extra strain on the knee joint.

But not only. According to the doctor, the wear can become more pronounced, with the continued use of this type of footwear, and reach other structures of the knee, also causing arthrosis. “In this case, in addition to the patellar cartilage, the structures surrounding the femur and tibia are also affected,” says Dr. Marco Cortelazo.

Besides surgery, there are other ways to treat chondromalacia patella.

Main forms of treatment

The doctor explains that there are many ways to treat chondromalacia patella without surgery, such as taking medications or physical therapy. “But, if the case is severe and surgery is needed, the root cause needs to be found. Patellar chondropathy may require surgery, such as arthroscopy, to smooth the joint surface,” says Dr. Marco Cortelazo. If wear and tear occurs on the joint, major surgery may be needed to replace or realign the joint. articulationwhich also means a long recovery time.

Tips to prevent knee problems

According to the specialist, the best solution to this dilemma is to use this type of heel sporadically, going halfway, preferring shoes that are neither too low nor too high, in a height that does not exceed the range of 2.5cm to 5cm. “Practicing regular exercises and controlling your weight are further precautions that prevent the possibility of knee problems”, concludes the doctor.
