Fasano Belo Horizonte: the best of Minas Gerais hospitality

The best hotel in the capital of Minas Gerais is synonymous with warmth, informality and luxury without edges

The brick facade in earthy tones betrayed him: I had arrived in Fasano. But one detail caught our attention: those bricks were interspersed and formed cobogós. Hours later, I was in the new market, the most interesting story of the revitalization of a public market in Brazil, and I noticed that the immense facade was all cobogós in very similar tones. The hollow element used to separate the inside and the outside causes a very interesting effect: the sun bathes the inside of the building through the cracks, airing the environment, the city enters.

The market, from 1962, dates back to the time when modernist architecture emerged in BH, while Fasano arrived in the city in 2018, more than fifty years later. However, both buildings couldn’t be better aligned. The city wins by not having to live with a building that clashes with what already exists and conquers those who visit it.

Located in the pleasant district of Lourdes, the Fasano BH is a luxury hotel because it is a Fasano. But what immediately captivates is the informality, which is one of the most captivating traits of the people of Minas Gerais. Upon arrival I was greeted with coffee, cheese bread and friendliness. Why are you crying, welcome drink? The employees, kind and spontaneous, are far from acting with that dated servility of some hotels of the same category.

I mentioned brick and earth tones, but the epitome of Bernardes Arquitetura design is the feeling of welcome in the living room (it would be heresy to call the space a lobby or reception). It is not a place of passage, the will is to sit and stay. Travertine marble floors, light amber, sofas and tables by Percival Lafer, John Graz and Lyceum of Arts and Crafts armchairs. And since we are in Minas Gerais, some objects have been mined in Tiradentes, such as a bench and even a table that was used in a dairy. The exposed bricks in terracotta tones, now no longer in cobogó, cover a large part of the ground floor and give warmth. It is the luxury that welcomes and comforts, without edges.

The jabuticaba tree, the natural light and the impeccable breakfast

Adjacent to the living room, there is a pergola with jabuticaba trees – which lets in lots of natural light – and the first tables of the restaurant. Gero, where breakfast is also served. Huge corten steel revolving doors separate this part from the internal room, which has acquired a more classic look.

The restaurant menu features recipes already established in São Paulo with a touch of Minas Gerais: dishes from the Tragaluz restaurant, in Tiradentes, and a list of cachaças and wines produced in Minas Gerais. I ordered two shots of the house – the green lasagna bolognese and then the tiramisu – faultless.

The neutral color palette goes up the 12 floors of the building forming an “L”. There are seven categories of accommodation and I stayed in the junior suite, which is 45m². Rich drapes in raw linen that skim the floor, king size bed with Zissou mattress, embracing Egyptian sheets. The living room integrated into the bedroom has a sofa at the foot of the bed, a Tiradentes coffee table and an armchair designed by Sergio Rodrigues, Beto. The massive workbench has a TV, plenty of outlets and a Harman Kardon speaker for crystal clear Spotify listening.

Now the bathroom: once again travertine marble, soapstone accessories, a bathtub and, what won me over, a ceiling shower that gushed out like a waterfall. And the services, what a challenge. It’s hard when we take them home, use them little by little to save until, coup de grace, we have to drip water to make what used to be absurdly smelly and it’s gone. If there are better services, I don’t know. The production is from Costa Brasil.

If the moment calls for it, you can go upstairs and book the best suite, the Penthouse, which measures 110m2, has a large terrace with jacuzzi, a vertical garden and an exclusive lift that descends directly to the garage. Or the 100 m² Fasano suite, which does not have a terrace, but is equipped with a living room, dining room and bathroom, ideal for meetings.

On the 12th floor, on the top floor, are three therapy rooms with hot stretchers, aromatherapy, and a menu of great massages. The area also has a wet sauna, solarium with loungers and a small unheated swimming pool.

Sunbeds and pool on the 12th floor

At that point, if I had to point out any repairs, I would mention the lift, a bit dark, especially at night. Back on the ground floor, up a staircase near the entrance, is the branch of little bar, the very elegant Fasano bar. Friday and Saturday nights are filled with MPB and jazz music. The hotel also has a good gym, six meeting rooms, and basement event space for up to 200 people.

At the moment the initiatives of the entrepreneur Gero Fasano are in full swing: in April the second Fasano was inaugurated in São Paulo in Itaim Bibi, Fasano Trancoso made its debut at the end of 2021 and the American Travel + Leisure has just awarded the Fasano Rio de Janeiro in the Best City Hotel category. OR Fasano BH she might not be in the spotlight, but there in the girl, like a good miner, she’s hitting a ball.
