Just like adults, children are also influenced by external factors when it comes to hair loss. According to Dr. Ademir Carvalho Leite Júnior, even at a young age, stress, anxiety and the pressure of life are among the main reasons for this problem, in addition to the criteria listed below.

Influence of hormones on hair loss

During the development phase, the hormones they are responsible for numerous alterations in the body, which affect the skin and the health of the scalp, causing the appearance of pimples and hair loss, as explained by Dr. Ademir Carvalho:

“When steroid hormones acting on the skin start to interfere with the behavior of the hair roots, there are two options: either they stimulate hair growth or, in some cases, they can cause atrophy.[…]configuring androgenetic alopecia (baldness)”.

Alopecia areata and telogen effluvium

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), alopecia areata affects approximately 2% of the population in Brazil, and anyone who thinks that this only includes adults is mistaken. As explained by trichologist Dr. Ademir, “some health problems, such as infections, for example, have children victims of cases of alopecia areata and effluvia”.

Popularly known as ‘pelada’, alopecia areata, according to WHO information, is a condition characterized by hair loss in rounded or oval areas of the scalp. Usually caused by genetic factors, autoimmune diseases can also arise due to stress or immune disorders such as diabetes, rhinitis and vitiligo.

Already telogen effluvium, which is also a sudden increase in hair loss, can be noticed by the loss of strands when washing or combing the hair. This case can be caused by fever, stress, inflammation, systemic disease, drug reactions, or even scalp dermatitis.

In addition to the criteria mentioned above, the trichologist emphasizes the influence of aesthetic procedures, responsible for most cases of hair loss in children. Explain that many parents and guardians try to fit their children into beauty standards by choosing to use chemicals on their hair.

“For me it is not a health problem, but the responsibility of parents and professionals who respectively allow and perform procedures of this type in the youngest”, reflects Dr. Ademir Carvalho.

Treatment for hair loss in children

Treatment of alopecia in children is a delicate matter, as many of the drugs cannot be used. Therefore, consultation with a specialist is essential for early diagnosis and adequate treatment for greater efficiency.

“My experience shows that children can evolve well. And, as in almost all cases of trichology, especially if they have an early approach to their conditions,” explains the professional.

Furthermore, the trichologist underlines that it is important that professionals are prepared to deal with delicate cases such as these. “It is a profile that has a certain biological, cutaneous and capillary immaturity as its peculiarity”, adds Dr. Ademir Carvalho.
