Versailles: the unpublished rooms of Marie Antoinette reopen

Far beyond the bedroom, the Queen of France had private rooms, a library, and lots of gold.

At the Palace of Versailles, Marie Antoinette’s private rooms are as luxurious as the life the Queen of France led. And the good news is that they have been restored and open to the public for a special visit which will last until the end of August and includes breakfast and a guided tour.

In 2019, the Queen’s bedroom had already reopened to the public. However, Marie Antoinette’s quarters were more spacious and actually consisted of two floors facing an internal courtyard of the palace. She had something of an obsession with interior design and was constantly renovating and expanding her quarters until mid-1788, four years before the Queen literally lost her mind.

Right on the first floor, the room known as the ‘Méridienne’ was completely redecorated in 1781, when the queen covered it with mirrors and fabrics in shades of lilac – the color would have been chosen to represent the joy at the birth of her first child with her Louis XVI. Built in the same year, the library is right next to this room and features different shades of gold and doors hidden by fake books, just like in the movies.

The next room is called the “Gold Room” and it’s no surprise: the green silk tapestries and the wainscoting on the walls are adorned with flowers, arabesques and gold medallions (it’s pure ostentation!). In addition, the Queen still had a dining room and billiard room for her own use, as well as smaller rooms used by her maids and servants.

Visits to Marie Antoinette’s private apartments can be made in particular periods: in 2023 they will take place from 10 to 24 August and from 23 to 31 December. Tickets cost €180 (nearly R$970) and include breakfast at the Palace of Versailles and a guided tour of the Queen’s chambers.
