And Brazil ranks second in the ranking of countries with the highest proportion of nether-nor youth, behind only South Africa, with 36 per cent of people aged 18 to 24 being nether-nor. Who says it is the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which used data from 2022.
According to the entrepreneur’s mentor André Minucci, several characteristics of Brazilian society can generate this. “As the demand for training and experience has increased, the labor market has become more restricted for those without a full formal education or additional qualification. Or precarious training in a large part of the population,” he analyzes.
Andrew also says that the economic and social crisis that comes from the end of the 90s and the fact that more and more young people live with relatives and are economically dependent on them contribute to this scenario. Furthermore, one of the main causes, in the case of women, is also early pregnancy, according to a study by the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea).
Measures to change the situation in Brazil
According to André, the neither-nor generation should not be seen as a demotivated or accommodating group, but people who are facing great challenges. Therefore, it is important that some measures are taken to help this part of the population and change the situation in Brazil in this regard.
Some of these measures are related to public order what governments should do. Investing in education and professional qualifications and promoting social inclusion actions, for example, are essential measures.
There are also actions that young people themselves or those around them can take. Those living with young people can, from an early age, encourage entrepreneurship and help them pursue their purpose. It is also a good thing that “nether-nor” young people, who are not yet working or studying, invest in mental health so as not to be discouraged by this situation.
