Cognitive performance can improve with training, study finds

It should be noted that in this investigation there was no conflict of interest on the part of the authors.

There’s no shortage of reasons why a guy has an active physical life, right? Even better when there is scientific evidence. In this sense, the study available in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease Reports has indicated physical training as a tool capable of improving cognitive performance.

Physical training as an improvement in cognitive performance

The researchers said at the outset that while there is evidence for the relationship between exercise training and functional brain network connectivity, knowledge is still minimal. Both effects of this physical effort on functional connectivity and large-scale brain networks.

Thus, these researchers involved 33 older adults, 16 of whom were diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment and 17 with intact cognition. In addition to the 12-week walk training, participants completed graded exercise, controlled oral word association, verbal auditory learning, narrative memory, and resting state “scan” tests.

There was again the examination of internal network connectivity between the default mode network, the frontoparietal network, and the salience network, and also the use of linear regression to test the “connections” of physical training changes in connectivity networking and cognitive function.

The result showed an increase in cardiorespiratory fitness and other ratings mentioned in the method of this experiment. Finally, the practitioners concluded that there is an increase in connectivity within and between networks, i.e., after physical training, interferes with improvements in memory action in individuals with intact cognition and with mild cognitive impairment due to to Alzheimer’s disease.

The expert’s point of view

“Working out with dumbbells, bodybuilding, using your own body or rubber bands also increases the release of dopamine. These are exercises that we call resistance exercises. These also induce the release of this neurotransmitter, but so do the other two types, which are balance exercises and flexibility. They improve dopamine. This is important in patients with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease, because all these modalities end up optimizing the release of these neurotransmitters,” he answered exclusively to Sport Life. Endocrinologist and sports doctor at the Instituto Cohen Dr. Clayton Luiz Dornelles.
