Brazilians will no longer need a visa to visit Japan

The reciprocity agreement signed between the Brazilian and Japanese governments goes into effect on September 30

The federal government announced on August 9 an agreement with Japan on reciprocal visa waiver for tourists. Starting September 30, Brazilians will only need a passport to enter the country. The provision also applies to Japanese who intend to visit Brazil. The waiver agreement has an initial validity of three years (until 30 September 2026) and allows the traveler to stay up to 90 days in the country.

In May 2023, the federal government resumed visa requirements for tourists from the United States, Australia, Canada and Japan, deeming the exemption was not reciprocal. According to the Foreign Ministry, the agreement with the Japanese government “stems from Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s announcement, on the occasion of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s visit to Japan last May, in the sense of extending the visa waiver to Brazilians, which allowed the Brazilian government to adopt the same measure for Japanese citizens, based on the principles of reciprocity and equal treatment between states”.
