According to a study published in Journal of Medicine and Science in Sport and Exercise.

And for those who think that a stair simulator is needed inside the gym for this, know that any place with steps works!

Study shows best way to increase cardio training

Researchers recruited healthy but sedentary women to walk up and down stairs at short intervals. While the first group performed three sets of 20-second climbs, the second performed the same process, but for 60 seconds each.

Including a brief warm-up and cool-down, the women spent less than 10 minutes a day (about 30 minutes a week total) exercising. However, even if they exercised little, they still showed significant cardiovascular and respiratory improvements, according to the research.

The reason for this, according to the study, is that stair climbing is an effective form of high-intensity interval training, the darling of fitness for decades, as it offers multiple health benefits.

Why are stairs the best option to increase your cardio training?

Previous research has extolled the benefits of high-intensity interval training on equipment such as treadmills or stationary bikes. But the study in question, however, shows that a regular ladder is just as good as these devices, not to mention much cheaper and easier to access.

Taking the time to go to the gym, get changed, wait your turn at the car, do your exercises, take a shower and go home is difficult or even impossible for many people. But who doesn’t have two minutes to quickly climb the stairs?

“Stair climbing is a form of exercise that anyone can do at home, after work or during their lunch hour,” she said. Martin Gibalathe study’s lead author and professor of kinesiology at McMaster University, in a news release.

“Interval training offers a convenient way to fit exercise into your life, rather than having to structure your life around exercise,” she concluded.
