This trend first caught on in 2008 in Japan and was created by pharmacist Sumiko Watanabe. And the diet is based on eating one banana every day in the morning. The idea is to replace the whole breakfast with banana at will. In some variations it says that only four bananas should be consumed with a glass or two of room temperature or lukewarm water.

And of course it’s okay to include bananas in your diet. After all, she it has numerous health benefits. “The banana is a fruit classified as a food with a high nutritional value, being rich in potassium, B vitamins, magnesium, fiber and tryptophan. The fruit also has an antioxidant, antibacterial, antithrombotic, vasodilator, anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic effect”, he explains nutritionist Jefferson Alexandre, who is part of the Odara team.

However, is the idea of swapping your morning meal for bananas really good and safe? According to the expert, not exactly.

Problems with the banana diet

First of all it is important to underline that bananas are not the best food to consume in large quantities when you want to lose weight. “The weight reduction advocated by the banana diet would be due to the satiety caused by the fruit, creating a sort of gel in the stomach which would lead to a delay in digestion. Because it is rich in carbohydrates, which increase the caloric value of meals,” says Jefferson .

Furthermore, in the banana diet, the main meal of the day ends up not being offered sufficient variety of nutrients so that the body has energy to carry out daily activities. In this sense, the most effective thing is to follow a diet in which the nutrients are well distributed between correct times and meals.

It is also worth mentioning that diabetic and chronic kidney patients should avoid this diet even more. This is because the first group should not consume excess potassium and the second need to avoid excess sugar.

That is, you can add banana to your diet, as this fruit is very good for your health. But not so, replacing an entire meal with it every day.
