The “Fantástico” report showed the case of a young man with 18 different personalities, a consequence of dissociative identity disorder (DID)
Last Sunday (20th) a report on ‘Fantástico’ (TV Globo) was broadcast on Giovanna Blasi, 21, who, in fact, prefers not to use her registered name, but rather “Sistema Resilienza”. You have Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), a serious and rare psychiatric condition that can produce different personalities in an individual.

Giovanna, for example, has 18 different identities, as she told the TV Globo editorial team. “Aline, Aurora, Dandara, Aiana, Tatà, I [Giovanna]Herbert, Isabella, Laura, Lina, Lua, Luara, Luiza, Maria Helana, Melanie, Momô, Jim and Ariel”, listed.
What is TDI?
Dissociative identity disorder (DID) is a complex psychological condition in which a person has two or more distinct identities, often called “personalities” or “alter egos.”
Each identity can have unique characteristics, memories and behaviors. The transition between these identities accompanies significant amnesia for events that occurred when other personalities were in control. That is, when a personality “incorporates”, the individual automatically forgets everything that the previous one did.
What causes TDI?
According to Dr. Fabiano de Abreu Agrela, a postdoctoral fellow in neuroscience and a member of the Society for Neuroscience in the USA and Sigma XI, the disorder can result from past trauma or abuse.
“The causes of DID are mainly associated with traumatic experiences, such as physical, sexual or emotional abuse in childhood. Thus, the disorder emerges as an individual’s defense strategy to deal with extreme trauma, fragmenting identity to avoid painful memories in full consciousness,” he explained. she explains.
According to him, this dissociative mechanism occurs when the mind tries to separate aspects of the personality to preserve emotional sanity. “Genetic factors and family predispositions may also play a role in the vulnerability to the development of DID, but trauma is considered the primary factor”, adds the expert.
Is the disorder curable?
Fabiano explains that DID treatment involves cognitive behavioral therapy, focused on identifying and challenging dysfunctional thought patterns. “It aims to unify the different personalities, promoting cooperation and internal harmony,” he says.
“The TDI can be controlled, either through the harmony between the personalities, or through their unification to reduce their number, depending on the case. The approach is totally individualized and with long-term results,” adds the neuroscientist.
