This procedure is performed using an instrument called a cannula, which is connected to a suction device so that the suction of fat”, sums up plastic surgeon Dr. Tácito Ferreira, member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery and specialist in advanced body techniques.

Cases in which Lipo HD is indicated

Furthermore, currently, the procedure performs other functions in addition to the reduction of localized fat. “The technique can still be combined with fat transplantation, which consists of injecting autologous fat, that is, of the patient himself, into the muscle, with the aim of hypertrophy,” says the doctor.

According to Dr. Tácito Ferreira, the procedure can be performed in different parts of the body, being most common in the abdomen, hips, legs and arms. “The procedure is ideal for people who have excess localized fat and little skin flaccidity in specific areas of the body,” says the doctor.

How is the procedure done?

Performed in a hospital setting and in combination of epidural and general anesthesia or, in some cases, local anesthesia, the technique is performed with the aid of a cannula through which the fat is aspirated, and is generally performed after the infusion of a saline solution containing local anesthetic and adrenaline (and may contain other medicines).

“This reduces blood loss, allows fat to be eliminated more easily and decreases postoperative discomfort, as it reduces pain, bruising and swelling after surgery,” explains the doctor. The patient goes home the next morning or usually the same day.

According to the specialist, the good news is that, with advances in technology, liposuction is no longer as invasive, painful or time-consuming as it once was: “And it’s much more effective than non-invasive procedures,” says Dr. Tacitus Ferreira.
