Those who practice regular physical activity know that training and nutrition must go hand in hand. No wonder that protein drinks gained attention in the fitness world.
There are different brands, tastes and, of course, the composition of the ingredients is also varied. In view of this, the Earth sought out two nutritionists, sports nutrition specialists, to evaluate the labels of five of the major brands available in the markets.
Cristina Menezes is also specialized in Clinical Nutrition and Intestinal Modulation. Renata Brasil is also specialized in Aesthetics and Nutrition applied to Hormonal Physiology. Evaluation results can be viewed below:

Cristina, checking the nutritional table of the product, rated its protein content as “good”, since it is made with natural ingredients, without the addition of sweeteners, dyes and preservatives, as well as being enriched with vitamins of the B complex and vitamins D “It’s a good option for vegans and those who can’t consume cow’s milk protein,” she points out.
Renata recommends it with reservation. She explains that, since peas are vegetable proteins, it is not possible to say that all 15 g of the substance present in the drink are absorbed. This is because there is a coefficient of protein efficiency, the PER, which indicates the actual protein absorption of the product.

Piracanjuba
The brand also surpassed Cristina’s evaluation, which highlights the high protein content, especially the concentration of milk and collagen. Furthermore, the drink does not contain sugar.
Renata also approves, but makes reservations. “There is a marketing ploy here, because the term ‘Whey’ is used, which is the purest protein, whey protein. However, the first ingredient listed on the label is not ‘whey protein “, or that is, the ingredient in the largest quantity in the product there is no whey, milk being the main source of protein in the product. Furthermore, the label does not specify how much of this protein actually comes from whey of milk,” he warns.
-
YoPRO
Approved and unreserved by the two experts. Cristina points out that the product has a high protein content, does not contain lactose or sugar.
Renata believes whey is not the main protein, but since the product is not advertised that way, the consumer cannot be wrong. What is sold is what is advertised.

three hearts
The product has not passed the nutritionist test. Renata points out that the product’s main source of protein is not whey, although the name is used in the product reference. “The main source of protein here is pasteurized semi-skimmed milk,” she corrects.
Cristina also adds that there are several emulsifiers, stabilizers and flavoring agents in the composition, which can cause allergic and inflammatory reactions. “It’s sweetened with sucralose, contains no dietary fiber, contains saturated fat and cholesterol.”
-
Bethany
Finally, Betânia, which failed the test for the same reasons: flavors, sucralose, stabilizers and “more carbohydrates than proteins”, strengthens Cristina.
“It is a milk-based drink with added protein. This in itself has a negative point: each production process of milk-based drinks generates more waste products, less pure and poorer in nutrients”, Renata begins.
“Also, this one contains a very small amount of whey – the label leads people to interpret that Whey would be the main source of protein, however, of the labels evaluated, this is the one that contains the ingredient in the smallest amount. since whey protein is whey protein and most of the protein in this product comes from milk and/or milk powder,” analyzes.

How to choose your protein drink among other brands?
The basic recommendation is: pay attention to the product label and check the protein content of the portion. Cristina Menezes suggests buying products whose composition is clean, free of sugars, additives and artificial elements.
The indication of Renata Brasil is on the same line. Call attention to the order in which the products are arranged on the product label, as this should guide the choice.
“The first ingredient is the one that appears in greater quantity in the product, the second, in the second greater quantity, and so on. (…) Another point is to understand the protein source used in that product, as the nutritional quality depends on its composition, digestibility, absorption, bioavailability of essential amino acids and total nitrogen”, he teaches.
