What little children! Harry Potter Parents Are Poisoning Their 15-Year-Old Daughter’s Life

There’s nothing wrong with liking certain books, supporting a football team, or losing your willpower to certain songs. But when the hobby turns out to be subordinate to all of life, that’s a problem. And it’s really bad when relatives begin to suffer from fanaticism.

What little children! Harry Potter Parents Are Poisoning Their 15-Year-Old Daughter’s Life

A Reddit user has complained that her parents made her life hell. The girl’s mum and dad are rabid fans of the Harry Potter saga.

A 15-year-old girl nicknamed LEAVEMEALOOOOONE shared her sad story, asking netizens for advice. Her parents met on a JK Rowling fan forum, fell in love and started a family. They had children, whom they named after characters from the Harry Potter and Star Wars universes. The user doesn’t specify how many siblings she has, and what names they were given, she only says her name is “foolishly”, and literally from childhood, content about Hogwarts, Azkaban, Death Eaters is ” shove down his throat”, and, of course, Harry and his friends.

“All of our family vacations, all of the weekends, all of the family fun – it’s all organized purely in the style of Harry Potter!” – the girl writes.

A separate nuisance is Christmas. Every year, the family reviews all the films of the saga in a row – children’s objections are not taken into account. Parents’ arguments: “it’s our tradition” and “if there weren’t Harry Potter, you wouldn’t exist at all”.

LEAVEMEALOOOOOOONE shared that she once managed to get away from home for two nights and spend the weekend at a friend’s house, and “it was such a relief to be around normal people who show sympathy for something in normal quantity”.

When the children began to rebel seriously and were on the verge of a nervous breakdown, demanding to be allowed to have their own interests, the parents decided that it was a sign that the children had grown up. And moved on to Game of Thrones.

“Parents build any activity around some sort of fandom: books, movies, TV shows. Otherwise, they just don’t know how!”

After a frank post on the Reddit platform, the girl received a flurry of personal messages and explained the kind of support that users had given her. It’s funny (or rather, very), but about a third of the posts contained… recommendations on what fantastic book she should read. Many tried to find out what name strange parents gave her. Someone else suggested a face-to-face meeting, but the daughter of a Harry Potter fan found such offers “scary”.

Should children share the interests of their parents?

Necessarily

Not necessary

But there were also some really encouraging messages. Users wrote that this story will be a warning to parents considering naming their child Drago, Khaleesi or Han Solo. Someone admitted he wondered if his hobbies put pressure on his family members. And many thought it necessary to assure the girl that soon she would not depend on her parents and not face the oppression of her own interests. And they gave advice on how to help parents think about psychotherapy.
