While necessary, discussing sex education is still controversial in schools and taboo in many families. But it shouldn’t be like that.

Approaching the issue naturally is one way to help protect children and adolescents from child sexual abuse. This problem is also growing in Brazil, according to the Brazilian Yearbook of Public Security.

It was in the midst of this context that Rio de Janeiro author Tássia Hallais decided to tackle the topic in the book “Lina’s CourageThe work aimed at children and teenagers tells, through a playful and educational language, the story of an 11-year-old girl – “beautiful, happy and admirably courageous” – who begins to live with fear and without fatigue after receiving a visit of a “monster”.

“I think it is an obligation of all of us to protect childhood and adolescence, so the work stems from my desire to contribute a little to this dialogue between children and pre-adolescents”, defends Tássia in an interview with Earth.

“I really wanted these kids and tweens to feel encouraged to talk to their guardians. The book has a very playful and welcoming language, there is nothing explicit that could shock or traumatize the child, but [serve] open this dialogue, because silence is not the solution. Not talking about the subject does not prevent violence from happening,” she adds.

During the conversation, the author anticipates a spoiler: Lina manages to overcome the trauma of violence. This is done with the support of family, friends, and therapy so that the character understands that she is blameless and is able to salvage her essence.

In the plot it worked. As for the book, it continues to pay off since its release. Tássia’s work was awarded in the Children’s Literature category of the “Asas de Ouro 2022” award.

Next Thursday (7), he will also exhibit his work at the Rio de Janeiro Book Biennial. The author will be at the “Write, Girl!” booth, located in the Pavilhão Verde, Q34, from 10:00 to 12:00.

Editorial producer and master’s degree in Brazilian literature, Tássia will publish a book on Maria Firmina dos Reis, author of “Úrsula”, known as the first abolitionist novel in Brazil.

“She is one of the first Brazilian writers, an abolitionist, a black woman who became a public teacher and a figure who, fortunately, has received more attention over the years”, underlines speaking of the author of Maranhão. Still with a language aimed at children, the book should be launched by the end of the year by the Metanoia publishing house.
