A Supreme Court of Mexico decided this Wednesday 6, invalidate articles and normative parts of the Federal Penal Code which provide prison sentences for women who have an abortiondecriminalizing the practice throughout the country.
On social media, the Court announced that “the legal system that penalizes abortion is unconstitutional, because it violates the human rights of women and people with the ability to conceive.”
In practice, neither women who terminate their pregnancies nor health professionals who carry out the practice can be punished.
Federal health care institutions should also offer the service. In 2021, the country’s highest court had already opened the possibility for states to legalize the procedure.
Where is abortion allowed?
